Baseball Wins a Wild One at Dickinson

Eighth-Inning Rally Lifts Bullets

CARLISLE, Pa. – Sophomore Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, and the Gettysburg College baseball team rallied for an entertaining 10-9  Centennial Conference (CC) victory at Dickinson on Tuesday.

In a back-and-forth affair, the Bullets (9-18, 3-8 CC) jumped to an early 7-2 advantage, only to see the Red Devils rally to assume a 9-8 lead in the seventh. But Gettysburg would have the final say, scoring twice in the eighth to come away with its second-straight win.

Senior Josh Cubell (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) walked leading off the eighth to kick off Gettysburg's late rally. Sophomore Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) reached on a fielder's choice before reliever Ethan Collins struck out two straight batters. Cubell would go on to score on a wild pitch to tie the game before LaCoe's eventual game-winning single brought home Gasparro.

LaCoe and senior Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) each went 3-for-5 at the plate, with LaCoe also finishing with a double and three RBIs while Sneed had three stolen bases. Freshman Matt Szczesny (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) contributed a pair of hits.

Junior Brendan Wright (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) posted a stellar relief appearance for Gettysburg, firing three scoreless innings and retiring the last eight batters he faced.

Brendan Pell went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Dickinson (6-20, 3-8 CC).

Gettysburg jumped on starter Billy O'Neil with three runs in the top of the first, which included an RBI-double from LaCoe and a run-scoring single from Sneed. The Bullets added a single run in the third on an RBI-single from Gasparro, but Dickinson answered with its second-straight one-run inning versus junior starter Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane), making it 4-2.

The Bullets put up another three-spot in the fourth to assume their 7-2 lead. Gettysburg strung together five singles in the inning, with Szczesny, LaCoe, and Gasparro knocking in one run apiece.

The Red Devils rallied with four runs in the bottom of the inning to pull within one. Szczesny helped prevent further damage, however, when the catcher threw out would-be base stealer at second to end the inning.

Gettysburg scored once in the fifth to go up 8-6 before freshman reliever Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) shut out Dickinson over the next two innings. But he would run into trouble in the seventh, when the Devils led off with back-to-back singles. Both runners would then score on an error to tie the game at 8-all.

Dickinson went on to load the bases after an error and a walk. That's when Wright was summoned out of the pen to face the top of the lineup. He struck out the first batter he would face before Dickinson scored on a wild pitch to take a 9-8 lead. However, Wright put out the fire by recording the final two outs of the inning on a pop-up and fly-out.

Wright (1-1) was outstanding the rest of the way, tossing back-to-back perfect innings while recording his first collegiate win. He finished with four strikeouts.

Gettysburg and Dickinson conclude their season series on Friday at Gettysburg with a single nine-inning game starting at 3:30 p.m.
