No. 1 Gettysburg Cruises Past Ursinus in Centennial Opener

Bullets top Bears 18-5

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The top-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team remains undefeated on the season as the Bullets cruised past the Ursinus College Bears 18-5 in the Centennial Conference opener at Clark Field on Saturday.

Gettysburg (7-0, 1-0 CC) has now won seven of the last eight meetings against Ursinus (1-7, 0-1 CC) by 10 goals or more. The Bullets have also corralled 15 or more goals in back-to-back games.

Junior Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) continues to dominate on the offensive end as she tied the program record, again, with seven assists in a game and added two goals to guide the Bullets with nine points. She also dished out seven assists in the season opener against Messiah College. Senior Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) scored a season-high four goals, while junior Bri Stokes (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) contributed three goals. Senior Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) and sophomore Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) chipped in two goals and four draw controls each.

Junior Casey Cole (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) logged in four saves and junior Claire Macatee (Street, Md./North Hartford) caused three turnovers to lead the Bullets defense.

Bridget Sherry paced the Bears offense with two goals, while Kaci McNeave tossed out three assists.

The Orange and Blue wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Cole registered two of the team's five goals in the first 10 minutes of action. After McKeever won the draw control, the Bullets marched down to the Bears territory where junior Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) took the first shot attempt of the game that went wide. Moments later, Cole posted the first tally 34 seconds in as junior Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) dished her the open look. McKeever, Stokes, and Colson were the other Bullet players to score during the spurt.

Ursinus fought back as they hit back-to-back goals roughly within a three-minute span to make it 5-2 with 17:32 to go.

The Bullets continued to do damage on the offensive end as they collected eight more tallies in the frame, while the defense held Ursinus to just six shots throughout the first half. Hanna Crowley scored the final goal for the Bears off a free position shot with 5:04 on the clock. The Bullets led 13-3 at intermission.

Freshman Caroline Keenaghan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown), sophomore Lauren Winters (Wynnewood, Pa./Haverford), senior Shelby Fragetta (Baltimore, Md./Towson), and sophomore Kerry Ullman (Fairfield, Conn./Academy of Our Lady of Mercy Lauralton Hall) all turned in their first goal of the season, while junior Maria Nemeth (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) recorded her fourth tally to conclude the Bullets scoring in the second half. The Bears netted two goals in the final frame. One off a free position shot from Bridget Sherry at the 23:00 marker and the last came from Hanna Crowley with 16:03 to go.

Up next for the Bullets is a home date with No. 13 College of New Jersey on Thursday, March 28, at 5 p.m.
