Senior Day for the Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team was a perfect 10.
The Mules scored three goals in the first three minutes, opened up a 9-2 halftime lead and breezed past McDaniel, 16-7, for their second straight Centennial Conference win.
The victory was the 10th of the season for Muhlenberg, tying the school record set by the 2008 team.Â
The Mules (10-2, 2-2) also set school records for most goals in a CC game, topping the 15 they scored against Swarthmore in 2008, and most assists in a season - 78, two more than the 2008 squad with four games still remaining.
Prior to the game, Muhlenberg honored its five senior players -
Niko Del Moro,
Lance Gibson,
Joey Hess,
Brian Lafond and
Dylan Moyer - and its senior student coach, "Uncle"
Will Edwards. During the game, it was the underclassmen who led the way, pointing to an ever brighter future for the program.
Del Moro's second-quarter goal was one of only two not scored by a freshman or sophomore (junior
Daniel Doreste had the other one). Thirteen different players found the back of the net, with sophomores
Jack Colt and
Scott Fayan and freshman
Nate Emrick scoring twice apiece.
Freshman
Ethan Grossman finished with a team-high four points on a goal and three assists, moving closer to the school's single-season records in both categories.
Freshman
Brandon Moyer opened the scoring 1:42 into the game. Sophomore
Frankie Feaster netted his 10th goal of the season at the 12:29 mark, with Colt notching his first goal 16 seconds later to give Muhlenberg a 3-0 lead before the Green Terror (6-8, 1-5) ever had possession of the ball.
Feaster finished 17-of-24 in the faceoff X and picked up 13 ground balls. After the Mules took a 7-2 lead on Emrick's second goal late in the second quarter, Feaster won the ensuing faceoff and passed to Grossman to make it two goals in a span of eight seconds.
Freshman
Jack Reilly scored his first career goal with 5:13 left in the fourth, and freshman
Zachary Cooper provided the final highlight by winning a faceoff and going right to goal to net his second career tally with Muhlenberg a man down in the final minute.
Sophomore
Garrett Pope had a fantastic game in goal, improving to 10-0 as a starter this season by making 17 saves, one off his career high.
As for the seniors, Del Moro, attackman Hess and defensive middie Lafond contributed to the win in their regular roles. Moyer picked up three ground balls as a faceoff wing, and Gibson played the final five minutes in goal, making a pair of saves.
