Women's Cross Country Earns Sixth National Championship

Six Titles Puts JHU In Second-Place In DIII History

Louisville, KY – Domination and depth. Those are the two words that best describe the Johns Hopkins women's cross-country program over the last decade. Things were no different in 2019 as Johns Hopkins used its depth to dominate once again, winning the NCAA Championship for the sixth-time in program history; all six titles have come since 2012.

The Blue Jays finished with 125 points, beating second-place finisher Washington University by 13 points. That would be the same Washington University that had jumped the Blue Jays in the USTFCCCA poll for the first-time this season earlier in the week and had edged Johns Hopkins by a single point for the 2018 national championship.

"To be able to get back on top after last year is very rewarding," Van Allen said.

Senior Samantha Levy led the way for JHU, finishing 17th, her best ever finish at Nationals. Rebecca Grusby and Ariel Keklak placed 21st and 23rd, respectively, giving the Blue Jays three top-25 runners, the only team to accomplish that feat. The trio earned All-American honors for their efforts on Saturday afternoon.

"I am so happy for our seniors and how things finished for them. For Sam and Rebecca to earn All-Americans and help lead us to another championship is really awesome," Van Allen said.

Senior Kristin Meek and late-season standout freshman Katharine Priu rounded out the top-five for Hopkins with 41st and 76th-place finishes. Meek passed off five runners in the final stretch run, finishing the race in 22:14.9 while Priu moved up nine spots over the final 2K, running the muddy course in 22:39.7.

Van Allen spoke equally as highly about his third senior, Meek, saying "For Kristin to get into our top-five this season and then finish just one spot shy of All-American in her first national meet was awesome for her and for us. It was a senior led performance and I couldn't be happier for all of them."

A large contingent of Hopkins fans made the trip to Louisville to cheer on the Blue Jays. Van Allen believes that group was crucial to the success of his team this afternoon.

"We couldn't have done it without the support we had. That was the biggest group of runners, parents, alumni, etc. we've ever had at nationals and it was crucial to keep our athletes going," he said.

The championship is Hopkins' third in the last four years and sixth in the last eight years. The Blue Jays haven't finished lower than fourth since 2011 and their six NCAA Championships is now tied for second-most in Division III history behind SUNY Cortland's seven.

"Each championship is special in their own right, but to earn the sixth just feels great," Van Allen said.
