LANCASTER – The Gettysburg College men's track and field team opened its 2017-18 season on Saturday at the Diplomat Open, hosted by Franklin & Marshall College.
Gettysburg's top finisher was sophomore
Ken Barnes (Edison, N.J./Westminster School [Conn.]), who placed eighth in a field of 51 in the long jump (20-1 1/2). Junior
Mike Cortese (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddon Township) placed 10th out of 30 competitors in the weight throw (40-0) while freshman
Matt Simmers (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) placed 16th in a field of 33 in the 60-meter hurdles with a time (9.80) that ranks him eighth in school history.
Other top performers included sophomore
Nate Trinidad Doherty (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson), who was 23rd of 50 competitors in the shot put (36-9), and freshman
Johnny Kovacs (New Providence, N.J./New Providence), who was 32nd of 80 in the 60-meter dash (7.46)
Gettysburg is off from competition until Jan. 27, when it travels to the Lehigh University John Covert Classic.
