Gettysburg Scores Victory over Suffolk

Gettysburg splits on first day at The Spring Games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. Senior Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) pitched a one-hit shutout against Suffolk University as the Bullets defeated the Rams 3-0 in the opener of The Spring Games in Florida. The Bullets then fell 3-0 in the nightcap against Eastern Connecticut State University.

The Bullets saw themselves in scoring position in the top of the first inning as lead-off hitter junior Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. A ground out by sophomore Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Northern) allowed Jonik to advance to third, but the Rams pitcher halted the Bullets chances as she struck out designated hitter senior Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) to end the inning.

The Gettysburg defense was outstanding through the third, fourth, and fifth as they held Suffolk to a three up, three down, in all three innings, with Clauser striking out five of the nine batters she faced. Both team's were still scoreless heading into the top of the sixth inning.

The top of the sixth was the turning point for the Bullets as the team picked up all three of their runs in the inning. Jonik started the inning off with a single to left field followed by a sacrifice bunt by junior Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff). An error by the Rams second baseman allowed the Bullets to take full advantage of the situation by Julie making it to first and Jonik to third, putting them in scoring position once again. Another error by the Suffolk's second baseman allowed Baker to reach first, Julie to second, and Jonik scored the first run of the game. Gettysburg collected its second run off an RBI single by senior shortstop Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) as she drilled the ball through the left side of the field. Up next, was sophomore pinch-hitter Brynn Griffith (Maple Glen, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) who also singled through the left side for her third RBI of the season, bringing Baker home to complete the scoring.

Suffolk's offense only reached base once in the final two innings, thanks to the defensive effort by Gettysburg.

Jonik, Julie, Taylor, Blasius, Griffith, and junior Nicole Farese (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) each posted a hit with Jonik, Julie, and Blasius all recording an RBI. Clauser corralled her 10th career shutout and season-high eight strikeouts to improve to a 3-0 record from the circle.

Gettysburg was unable to rally a victory in the second game against Eastern Connecticut State.

With two outs and a player on first and second base, the Warriors took advantage of the Bullets defensive error. Calli Duthrie singled to left field and then advanced to second on Gettysburg's throwing error, allowing Megan Hodgdon to go to third and Jackie Lewis to score the first run in the top of the second inning.

An RBI double in the top of the fourth and a run scored in the fifth gave the Warriors a 3-0 advantage.

The Bullets were pushing for the comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs in the inning, freshman Kyleigh Dinnien (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) came in to pinch hit and reached base as she tallied a single to the shortstop. Fellow classmate Hannah Lindert (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) also came in to pinch hit and reached base on an error by the Warriors shortstop, sending Dinnien to third. Jonik was next at-bat, but struck out.

Freshman Skylar Spinner (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) took the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in seven innings. Junior Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic), Baker, and Dinnien each notched a hit.

Gettysburg resumes action at The Spring Games with a pair of games on Tuesday. The Bullets take on the College of Wooster and Washington University in St. Louis at 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively.
