LANCASTER, Pa. – A 26-minute goal in the opening half was the difference as 21st ranked Franklin & Marshall College edged the Gettysburg College men's soccer team in a Centennial Conference affair on Wednesday night at Tylus Field.
With tonight's loss, Gettysburg (7-5-1, 4-3 Centennial Conference) slips down to the fifth position in the Centennial Conference (CC) standings. Dickinson holds the top spot with a 5-1-1 Centennial Conference mark, with Haverford at second (5-1 CC), Johns Hopkins at third (5-2 CC), and Franklin & Marshall at fourth (4-1-2 CC).
In the opening half, the Bullets did not have many quality offensive opportunities as the Diplomats controlled much of the play down in Gettysburg's territory. F&M outshot Gettysburg 8-4 and notched the 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.
F&M rallied the lone goal with 26:24 on the clock in the opening half as Ryan Fincher sent a short pass to the center of the box to Ugo Okolie who headed the ball into the top left of the net.
In the second half, the Bullets' offense crawled their way back in shot opportunities as they tied the Diplomats with seven each. Of the seven, three shots were on goal. Within the first five minutes, the Bullets knotted two shots, both nearly missing the net. Gettysburg's last chance for a goal came from freshman
Connor Fife (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) as he headed the ball with under 2:05 remaining in the match, but F&M's goalkeeper saved it.
F&M ended the night outshooting Gettysburg 15-11 and holding the 7-2 edge on corner kicks.
Goalkeeper
Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) made two saves on the night.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday with a Centennial Conference match against Swarthmore College starting at 4:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
