Bullets, Mules Battle to Tie

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg College on a cold fall night at Clark Field.

After tonight's tie with Muhlenberg, Gettysburg now finds itself in third place in the Centennial Conference standings with McDaniel at second (5-3 CC record) and Johns Hopkins (7-0 CC record) at the top position.

In a physical match between the two teams, Gettysburg slipped in a goal with 1:04 left on the clock in the opening half as senior Virginia Sanford (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School) controlled the loose ball and kicked it over the goalkeeper's head to put the Bullets ahead 1-0 going into halftime.

Both squads played evenly in the opening half as each collected five shots with Gettysburg holding the 2-1 edge on corner kicks.

Muhlenberg tied the match 23 minutes into the second half as Makenzie O'Brien found Casarah Morales who shot from the right side of the field into the back of the net.

The Bullets hammered at the net several times throughout the second half but were unable to connect on their opportunities, sending the match into its first overtime.

Gettysburg received two of their better looks at the net early in the first overtime with a header from senior Alexa Bushey (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and a shot by freshman Christina DiGiulio (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria), but Muhlenberg's goalkeeper saved both.

The Bullets defense did not allow a shot on goal in the second overtime, while the offense had three tries at the net but were unsuccessful.

Gettysburg ended the match outshooting Muhlenberg 21-9 and owned the 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Gettysburg plays its final non-conference match of the season on the road at Susquehanna University on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 7:00 p.m.
