Women’s Basketball Holds Off Juniata

Bullets set to face host Lebanon Valley for tournament title

ANNVILLE, Pa. Senior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) scored 16 of her game-high 21 points in the second half and junior Kiera Cesareo (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) hit a clutch three-pointer with 43 seconds left as 19th-ranked Gettysburg College earned a 73-66 victory over Juniata College at the Lebanon Valley College Rinso Marquette Tournament Saturday night.

Gettysburg (1-1) will meet host Lebanon Valley (1-3) for the tournament title Sunday at 2 p.m. The Dutchmen easily beat Bryn Athyn College 73-40 in Saturday's opening game.

Dorshimer finished with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals to lead the Bullets. After going 1-of-7 for five points in the first half, the senior hit 5-of-8 shots in the second half. Junior Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, while Cesareo led the reserves with eight points.

Gracie Stauffer led the way for Juniata with 18 points and nine rebounds. Kaeana Rebert posted 15 points and eight boards, while Cassie Mock turned in 14 points.

Playing its second 2018 NCAA Division III Tournament qualifier and 20-game winner to start the year, Gettysburg broke out to an 11-1 lead as Gehrin set the tone with three driving lay-ups. The Eagles weathered the initial outburst, pulling to three by the end of the first quarter and tying the contest at 13-13 on a three-pointer by Rebert at the start of the second period.

Gehrin broke the tie with another drive to the bucket, kicking off a 6-0 run. The lead stood at 28-21 heading into the locker room.

The beginning of the third quarter belonged to Gettysburg as the team raced ahead with a 16-0 run. Cesareo accounted for five-straight points on an old-fashioned three-point play and a lay-up and a jumper by Gehrin made it 46-25 with 5:21 left in the third quarter.

Juniata refused to back down and rallied with a 12-4 run to end the quarter to slice the deficit down to 52-39. The fourth quarter began with a three-point play by freshman Mackenzie Tinner (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) that pushed the advantage to 16 (55-39) and the Bullets maintained that margin following a jumper by junior Emma Hahner (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) which made it 59-43 with 7:49 to play.

The Eagles mounted a furious rally over the next five minutes, erasing the double-figure deficit and pulling to two (65-63) on a lay-up and free throw by Stauffer with 3:07 to go. After trading free throws, sophomore Meredith Brown (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) scored on a putback to push the lead back to four (68-64) with 74 seconds remaining. Juniata converted its own second-chance points on the following possession as Stauffer came down with an offensive rebound and put it back in the hoop.

That would be as close as the Eagles would get as Cesareo banged home a three-pointer with 43 seconds left and Dorshimer hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to seal the win.

Gettysburg finished 27-of-67 (40.3 percent) from the floor. The Bullets scored 25 points off turnovers and held a 23-7 advantage in bench points. Gettysburg committed just five turnovers in the game compared to 21 by Juniata. The Eagles won the rebounding battle 46-36.
