Bullets Earn Sweep at McDaniel, Reilly Claims 50th Win

Gettysburg defeats McDaniel 5-2 and 5-3

WESTMINSTER, Md.  – Senior Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) became just the second Gettysburg College pitcher and only the 10th in Centennial Conference history to reach 50 career wins and the Bullets pulled off their second conference sweep of the season at McDaniel College on Thursday.

Gettysburg (7-9, 4-0 CC) has yet to play on its home field this spring, but the Bullets have made the most of their opportunities in Centennial play, sweeping a pair of playoff teams from last spring. The Bullets took down McDaniel (9-13, 3-3 CC) 5-2 in the opening game and settled for a 5-3 decision in the nightcap.

Reilly was touched up for a pair of runs in the second inning of the opener as the Bullets fell behind 2-1. The senior settled into a grove in the final five frames, allowing just two more hits and stranding four runners.

Gettysburg's bats picked things up in the top of the third with four runs. Freshman Brooke Studnik (Miami, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop), sophomore Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff), and senior Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) each posted run-scoring singles, while sophomore Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Leonardo capped the victory with a diving stop on a grounder by Tori Wilkins and fired over to first base for the final out.

Reilly tossed a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. She became the first Bullet hurler to reach 50 career wins in 12 years and trails all-time leader Shannon Kiry '06 by five.

Studnik finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a run, and two RBI. Leonardo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jonik reached base twice via walks. Junior Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) recorded her 100th career hit in her first at bat and drew a walk.

Gettysburg rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the nightcap. The Bullets loaded the bags to start the fourth inning with two runs eventually coming home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) and a double-steal.

Cowell began Gettysburg's final offensive display with a one-out double in the sixth inning. Three consecutive walks scored the sophomore and a pair of wild pitches resulted in two more runs and a 5-2 lead.

McDaniel mounted a rally in its final at bat and cut the deficit to two on a two-out single by Carly Deichman. With two runners on base, junior Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) induced a fly out to center field to end the game.

Clauser picked up the win after coming in as a reliever to start the second inning. She allowed one run on five hits with four walks and a strikeout. Freshman Madison Cannatelli (East Wenatchee, Wash./Chaparral) led the lineup with two hits.

Gettysburg hosts Haverford College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
