Wrestling Takes First Six Matches In Win Over NYU

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 27, 2017) – The No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team solidified its spot atop the Hudson-River Rivalry Friday night with a 26-14 win over No. 14 NYU in Hoboken.

The win pushed Stevens' dual record to 17-0, and extended its historic win streak to 31. The victory was also the fifth of the season against a team ranked in the NWCA top-25 at the time of the match.

Prior to the match, Stevens honored its five seniors in Rob Murray, Pete Andrich, Colin Navickas, Leo Wortman, and Danny Moore.

Murray delivered the initial major after catapulting ahead from a 6-6 deadlock late in the third period, before freshman No. 1 Troy Stanich picked up a crucial pin late in the first at 133 in the most anticipated match of the night.

With the match knotted up and time expiring in the first, the top-ranked rookie flipped No. 2 Nathan Pike on his back to capture his 15th fall of the season. The win was Stanich's 30th overall, and keeps him undefeated for the season.

Freshman Dylan Van Sickell continued the shutout with a hard-fought 14-11 decision at 141, followed by junior No. 10 Zach Wilhelm's 12-1 major at 149. Sophomore No. 7 Thomas Poklikuha held his lead throughout at 157 en route to an 8-1 decision victory, while Navickas sealed a win at 165 thanks to the riding-time bonus point.

NYU finally did get on the board with a technical fall at 174 then again by injury default at 184, but junior No. 8 A.J. Kowal ended the run with a 4-2 win at 197. NYU won once more with a 10-4 decision at 285, but the victory had already been secured in favor of the Ducks.

Stevens will be back in action tomorrow when it travels to Allentown, Pa. for a quad against Muhlenberg and Ursinus starting at noon.
