Top-Ranked Bullets Dispatch Swarthmore

Gettysburg takes down Garnet 16-3

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Maggie Welsh (Rye, N.H./Holy Child) scored a career-high four goals and junior Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) and sophomore Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) each tallied personal-best point totals to lead No. 1 Gettysburg College to a 16-3 win over Swarthmore College on Saturday.

Gettysburg (9-1, 3-1 CC) rebounded from its first loss of the season with a dominating display against Swarthmore (7-2, 2-2 CC). The Bullets scored the first six goals of the game and turned in the first seven of the second half in the victory.

Typically a playmaker from behind the cage, Welsh scored more goals in Saturday's affair than she had coming in and topped her career high by one. Colson filled the stat sheet with three goals, three assists, two caused turnovers, and four draw controls, while Orzechowski produced three goals and an assist in the second half.

Gettysburg was held out the scoring column for a few minutes to open the game, but junior Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) made the first of her game-high 10 saves in the first two minutes to keep the hosts off the board.

Colson tallied the day's first goal at 23:11 and the Bullets were off and running with five more tallies over the next 14 minutes. Colson provided the assist on a score by junior Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) that made it 6-0 with 9:03 left in the half.

After entering the half with a 7-2 advantage, Gettysburg ran off a 7-0 run over the first 19 minutes of the final period. Orzechowski and Welsh each tallied a pair of goals during the run and Colson's third and final goal made it 14-2 with 11:02 to go.

Orzechowski capped the scoring with an assist to senior Maggie McClain (Wexford, Pa./Sewickley, Academy) before taking it to the rack herself with 2:05 remaining.

Swarthmore finished with a 28-26 edge in shots, while Gettysburg led in draw controls 12-9. Both teams corralled 14 ground balls.

Senior Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) posted a goal and two assists for Gettysburg. Sophomore Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) and freshman Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) each scored a goal and combined for seven draw controls.

Senior Ali Gorab (Southport, Conn./Ludlowe) and junior Brooke Holechek (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) each scooped up two ground balls with the latter adding a caused turnover.

Pilder reached double-figure saves for the third time this season while playing the first 37:55. Sophomore Casey Cole (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) made three stops over the final 22 minutes.
