Stanich Takes Third at 141 to Lead No. 10 Wrestling at Princeton Open

PRINCETON, N.J. (November 4, 2018)  – Junior Troy Stanich earned a third-place finish at 141 to lead a quartet of wrestlers representing No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling Sunday at the Princeton University Open.

Sophomore Brett Kaliner placed fourth at 149 and junior Dylan Van Sickell reached the quarterfinals at 157 as the Ducks were well-represented in the top of the bracket at the open event, which featured five, ranked Division I teams.

"Our goals coming into Princeton were for our wrestlers to get an opportunity to wrestle different competition, be put into an uncommon situation, and for them to perform with adversity," said head coach Joe Favia. "Each of our [four wrestlers] met those goals. They all had success in different areas and they all suffered defeat in different areas. The trip was exactly what we wanted it to be."

After an opening-round bye, Stanich opened his 2018-19 campaign with a victory by major decision (13-5) over Rutgers' Robbie Cleary. Stanich totaled eight majors as a sophomore. The Roxbury, New Jersey native continued his march through the tournament with a 12-8 decision over Purdue's Alec White and a technical fall over Sacred Heart's Gerard Daly to reach the quarterfinals. Stanich was leading 16-1 at the time of the stoppage.

In the semifinal, Stanich took on Purdue's 14th-ranked Nate Limmex and gamely battled before dropping a hard-fought 7-4 decision. The setback was just the third of Stanich's career.

The 141-pounder quickly bounced back, earning a technical fall victory over Columbia's Dan Fongaro. Stanich was leading 18-2 at the time of the stoppage.

Kaliner, the national runner-up at 141 last season, opened his 2018-19 campaign at 149 in a big way, picking up a technical fall over Columbia's Sam Webster. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native reached the semifinals by pinning Sacred Heart's Shaun Williams in the first period and earning a 5-1 decision over Purdue's Parker Filius. Kaliner's run came to an end after he dropped two close decisions to Stanford's Requir Van Der Merwe (8-6) and Old Dominion's Kenan Carter (6-5). Carter was a top-five finisher at 149 in the Mid-Atlantic Conference.

Moving up to 157, Van Sickell opened his 2018-19 campaign with a 4-2 decision over Sacred Heart's T.J. Calas and reached the quarterfinals with a first-period pin of Princeton's Conor Melbourne. The Little Silver, New Jersey native finished second on the team in 2017-18 with 36 wins and 13 pins.

Van Sickell fell to No. 17 Lucas Weiland and then dropped a competitive 11-6 decision to Old Dominion's Kevin Budock in the consolation bracket.

Sophomore Colin Myles was the fourth Stevens grappler to compete at the Open, but the Sparta, New Jersey native bowed out of the tournament with an injury in his first-round matchup with West Point's Alex Hopkins.
