YORK, Pa. – Fifth-ranked Gettysburg College broke out the game's first seven goals and senior Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) came up with a big save with two minutes remaining to help the Bullets hold off No. 4 York (Pa.) College 8-6 in non-conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday night.
 
Gettysburg (5-0), which won its last two outings in overtime, took care of business in regulation against York (4-1) for its third consecutive victory over a ranked team in as many outings. The last time the Bullets played and beat three ranked teams in a row was in 2009.
 
Brady, the reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week, racked up a dozen saves, including a point-blank stop on a shot by Hunter Davis with 2:13 left. Gettysburg ran off over a minute of clock time on its ensuing possession. After getting the ball back, York's last shot attempt with was wide of the mark.
 
Freshman Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) and sophomore Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each posted two goals with the latter also dishing out an assist. Junior Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) handed out three helpers and picked up two ground balls.
 
Sophomore Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) picked up six ground balls and senior Cullen Minion (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover for the Gettysburg defense.
 
Davis and Jake Hvazda each posted a goal and an assist for York.
 
Gettysburg had its offense running hot from the outset as senior Geoff Fulgione (North Andover, Mass./Brooks School) won the opening face-off and raced to the cage for the game's first tally eight seconds in. Fletcher added a pair of goals and junior Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) ripped a shot past the goalie to make it a 4-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Bullets made it difficult for York to get any offensive flow, forcing three failed clear attempts and nine total turnovers in the first half. With the defenders closing ranks in front, Brady ate up all seven shots he saw on goal in the first half.
 
Kolen had a hand in all three second-quarter goals, first handing out the assist to senior Justin McBride (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and then scoring on back-to-back passes from Heller to give Gettysburg a 7-0 lead at the break.
 
The Spartans finally cracked the scoring column at the beginning of the second half on a man-up goal by Hvazda. Junior Mike Risser (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) came right back following a feed by Heller to make it 8-1.
 
York controlled the clock for the remainder of the third quarter as the Bullets turned it over three times. The Spartans pulled to 8-3 by the end of the frame.
 
Dylan Wolf scored an advantage goal for York to start the fourth quarter. Following a turnover by Gettysburg, Brendan McGrath hit the net to make it a three-goal game. The Spartans won the ensuing face-off and didn't waste time as Dillon Hannah sliced the deficit down to two (8-6) with just 2:31 left to play.
 
The hosts went to goal quickly after winning the next draw but Brady was up to the task with his final save of the game.
 
York finished with the lead in shots (31-22) and ground balls (29-24). The Spartans won 7-of-8 face-offs in the second half and finished 10-of-16 for the game.
 
Gettysburg lines up against Eastern University at home this Saturday at 1 p.m.
