Men’s Lacrosse Upended at Washington and Lee

Generals hand third-ranked Bullets first loss 13-8

LEXINGTON, Va. The Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team saw its perfect start come to a halt as Washington and Lee University capitalized on a 9-2 run spanning the first and second quarters to push past the third-ranked Bullets for a 13-8 victory.

Gettysburg (6-1) out-shot Washington and Lee (5-3) 38-31 and committed eight less turnovers, but the Generals took advantage of a 16-7 edge in face-offs and received 11 saves from goalie Jack Taylor.

Senior Mike Risser (Chester Springs, Pa./Downington East) and sophomore Michael McCormick (Lorton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) each scored a pair of goals for the Bullets. Junior Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) and sophomore Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each scored a goal and an assist. Sophomore Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) paced the defense with five ground balls, while senior Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) finished with four ground balls and five saves.

A.J. Witherell scored three goals, dished out two assists, and picked up three ground balls for Washington and Lee. Sam Dardani, Jones Veith, and Mike Weaver all recorded a pair of tallies, while Jack Hodgson went 16-of-23 on face-offs.

The Generals broke out the game's first goal, but Gettysburg answered with back-to-back scores by Harvey and junior Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston). The advantage was short-lived as Hodgson scored 19 seconds later to tie the game.

Washington and Lee seized the lead for good with three more goals during a 59-second time frame. Mike Weaver gave the hosts a 5-2 lead with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter. Risser scored to cut the deficit to two at the end of the opening period.

The Generals widened the gap with a 5-1 run to start the second quarter. After Risser's second goal brought Gettysburg within three (7-4), Washington and Lee rattled off the next three goals and went into the break leading 10-5.

The Bullets went on the comeback trail with goals by Kolen and McCormick in the third period, but the hosts sealed the decision by out-scoring Gettysburg 3-1 in the fourth.

Gettysburg resumes action at Widener University this Saturday at 1 p.m.
