GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's wrestling opened their 2022-23 season with an 8
th place finish at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Bears earned a total of 54.5 points as three members earned top four finishes in their opening tournament of the season.
"We had some strong individual performances, and it was great to see some of our freshman earn their first career wins," Head Coach
Joe Jamison said. "The effort was there today but we have a lot of room for growth. We're looking forward to get everyone healthy over the next few weeks and improving on today's performance."
Senior
Terry Adams earned a second-place finish at 125lbs after going 3-1 to open his season. Adams opened his day with a fall in just 47 seconds over Wheaton's Cooper Chapman and advanced to the semifinals with an 8-7 decision over McDaniel's Alex DuFour. In the semifinals, Adams won via a 2-1 decision after a late reversal and a clean ride but fell in the finals to Washington & Lee's Riley Parker 6-1.
At 133lbs, first-year
Michael Adams went 2-2 in his debut, after a 5-3 overtime victory advanced him to the quarterfinals. Adams fell in the quarters but bounced back with a 10-6 decision over Washington & Lee's Trey Custodio. Classmate
Andrew Minko earned his first collegiate victory at 133lbs with a 5-4 decision over Brad Singer of W&L.
Senior
Romeo Rodriguez went 3-2 in his season debut collecting a fourth-place finish at 141lbs. Rodriguez advanced to the semifinals with back-to-back wins, earning a 13-5 major decision in his opening match before advancing with a win by injury default over Elizabethtown's Zach Rupp. After a loss, Rodriguez bounced back with an 8-4 decision before falling in the third-place match.
First-year
Anthony Cerulli collected his first two collegiate pins and finished 2-2 at 165lbs. Cerulli dropped his opening match but bounced back with falls over W&L's Harrison Kelly (1:10) and Liberty's Jordan Scott (0:25). Senior
Shawn Marchesano opened his season with a 4-1 record and a third-place finish at 165lbs. After receiving a bye, Marchesano advanced to the semifinals with a major decision and a fall over Gettysburg's Justin Richey (2:56). He dropped a match in the semis, but answered back in the consolations earning back-to-back major decisions over Mark Troni (13-4) and Messiah's Zach Needles (13-1) for a top three finish.
At 174lbs, senior
Alex Koenig and junior
Jackson Brandt each won their opening match but finished the day with a 1-2 record. Koenig opened with a thrilling 12-10 overtime victory and Brandt followed with a 11-2 major decision over Johns Hopkins Kadin Khalloufi. First-year
Nils Updale earned his first-career victory at 184lbs with a pinfall over Messiah's Nathaniel Manarin at exactly one minute. At 285lbs, seniors
Amir Pickens and
Gavin Range opened with victories but eventually fell in their next two matches.
The Bears will return to action on Saturday as they host the Racich Rumble from the Floy Lewis Bakes Center at 9:30 a.m.
