LEESBURG, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica began action at The Spring Games on Sunday by going 2-0 despite a last-minute schedule change, which saw one game get canceled and a new opponent added.

CSS 9, Washington (Md.) 6
The Saints were not scheduled to play Washington College (Md.), but since travel issues caused the University of Maine-Farmington to cancel its games against both the Saints and Washington College on Sunday, it made sense for both of those two teams to faceoff, which they did.

The Shorewomen (2-1) jumped out to a 4-1 lead after 2.5 innings, but the Saints responded with a Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) RBI single in the third to bring in Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS). After two quick outs in the fourth, St. Scholastica put together a two-out rally as Heidi Stewart (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Saint Mary's)) drove in Breuer, who had just tripled to make it 4-3. Two batters later, Laviano hit a three-run home run, for her first collegiate dinger, to give the Saints a 6-4 advantage.

Washington errors in the fifth inning extended the CSS lead to 9-4. The Shorewomen would add two more runs in the sixth, but that was it as the Saints took their first game down in Florida 9-6.

Howe earned the complete-game win, striking out seven. Laviano was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Breuer was 2-for-2 with four runs scored.

CSS 12, St. Norbert 9
The Saints started out the game by scoring first in the first inning with a double by Laviano scoring Howe. The Saints scored two more runs in the third giving themselves a 3-0 lead. That same inning however, the Green Knights (0-3) took the lead by scoring four runs on only one hit.

In the fifth inning St. Norbert extended the lead over St. Scholastica and scored another four runs off four hits this time to make it 8-4. But the Saints came back quickly in the sixth and scored eight runs with five hits taking back their lead 12-8. Seven of those eight runs came with two outs as the Saints capitalized on St. Norbert errors and took extra bases when they could. One more run was scored in the seventh by the Green Knights, but Howe was able to close the game for CSS and close out the day with their second win.

At the plate, Laviano went 4-for-5, not to mention her second collegiate home run in the Saints first game against Washington College. Sydney Plemel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) also went 2-for-3 for the Saints.

Up Next
