WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior
Camden Stoops (East Prospect, Pa./Eastern York) and sophomore
Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) each went 2-0 to help Gettysburg College wrap up a pair of Centennial Conference victories Saturday afternoon at McDaniel College.
Gettysburg (9-4, 3-2 CC) pulled out back-and-forth battles with both Johns Hopkins University (4-8, 3-2 CC) and Washington and Lee University (5-6, 3-2 CC). The Blue Jays won three of the first four matches before the Bullets stormed back for a 26-17 decision. Against the Generals, Gettysburg sealed a 21-15 victory by winning three of the final four bouts.
Following close calls in each of the last two seasons, Gettysburg secured its first win over Johns Hopkins in a decade. Freshman
Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) scored a 15-7 major decision at 141 pounds, but the Bullets trailed 10-4 through four matches.
Sophomore
Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) was headed toward a major decision at 157 pounds before getting a late takedown and putting Alex McLaughlin's shoulders to the mat with one second remaining in the match. Junior
Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) put the Bullets in front 16-10 with a first-period pin (1:47) at 165 pounds.
Gettysburg trailed 17-16 heading into the final two matches. Stoops wasted no time at 197 pounds, quickly taking down Miles Gilliam and earning a 72-second pin. Triandafilou, who came into the day ranked fifth in the country, dominated the heavyweight contest to the tune of a 12-1 major decision.
Gettysburg split the opening eight bouts with Washington and Lee, rotating decisions all the way through 184 pounds. Junior
Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley), Devlin, and Kowalski each picked up decisions to keep the Bullets on track.
Sophomore
Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) came up with a clutch pin at 174 pounds as he jumped out to an 8-0 lead before working his opponent's back to the mat at 2:34. After the Generals tied the match 15-15 with a decision at 184, Stoops gave his team the lead again with a 5-0 decision at 197.
Squaring off for the second time this season, Triandafilou and Matt Kaminer had to settle their differences in overtime once again. Triandafilou, who beat Kaminer 2-1 in their first meeting, seized an opportunity and scored a takedown 32 seconds into sudden victory to clinch a 3-1 win. The sophomore improved to 13-0 in overtime bouts in his career and ran his season record to a perfect 18-0.
Next up for Gettysburg is a visit to nationally-ranked Messiah College on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m.
