GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Both duals between Gettysburg College and Swarthmore College came right down to the final events with the Garnet holding off the Bullets for a pair of victories in Centennial Conference swimming action at the Bullets Pool Saturday.
Swarthmore managed to clinch the team decisions with 1-2 finishes in both 200 individual medley races. The men's score was 135.5-126.5, while the women's score was 134-128 in favor of the Garnet.
It was a back-and-forth battle from the outset in the men's meet with Gettysburg (6-1, 3-1 CC) taking the initial lead with a victory by the 200 medley relay team of sophomores
Aedan Collins (Westfield, N.J./Westfield),
Oliver Yancey (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), and
Jack Edelson (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Senior) and freshman
Sam Nonemaker (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg). The Bullets beat out the Garnet team by 0.38 with a time of 1:34.62.
Sophomore
Duncan Proxmire (McLean, Va./Langley) followed with the first of his two individual victories in the 1,000 free. Proxmire beat defending CC champion Michael Lutzker by eight seconds with a mark of 9:44.71. Later in the meet, the Gettysburg sophomore would take down another defending conference champ in the 500 free, out-swimming Alec Menzer by four seconds with a time of 4:43.14.
Swarthmore (7-1, 5-0 CC), ranked 14th in the latest national poll, regained the lead with three-straight wins in the 200 free, 100 back, and 100 breaststroke. Freshman
Oliver Pickering (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) swam a season-best time of 1:55.04 to claim top honors in the 200 fly and sophomore
Aedan Collins (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) followed with a victory in the 50 free to hand Gettysburg the lead heading into the first break. Collins' time was 21.62.
Despite a win by Nonemaker in the 100 free (47.03), the Garnet surged back in front with 1-2 finishes in the 200 back, 200 breast, and 100 fly. Another 1-2 finish by Jeremy Rockaway and Greg Kalminskii in the 200 IM sealed the dual victory.
Gettysburg closed the meet with Nonemaker, Yancey, senior
Parker Sorenson (Evergreen, Colo./Homeschooled), and Collins sprinting to a victory in the 200 free relay (1:24.89).
On the women's side, Swarthmore (6-3, 5-1 CC) managed to stay just in front of Gettysburg (5-3, 3-2 CC) for most of the meet. A Garnet victory in the 200 medley relay was answered in kind by a win by sophomore
Katherine Sears (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown West) in the 1,000 free. Sears sped away from Hannah Kloetzer in the final 150 yards and finished with a time of 10:46.07. The pair turned in another competitive race in the 500 free later in the meet with the Swarthmore swimmer just beating out the Bullet sophomore with a time of 5:18.29.
Sophomore
Katie Cooper (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored the first of her two individual wins in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.68. Cooper went on to touch first in the 200 breast (2:28.31) later in the contest.
Junior
Kate Crilly (Shrewsbury, N.J./Ranney School) raced to a victory over Anna Kottakis in the 50 free (24.88), but the Garnet swimmer rebounded to edge out the Bullet junior in the 100 free 54.42 to 54.81. Freshman
Megan Wojnar (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), who narrowly missed a win in the 200 free earlier in the meet, picked up a two-second victory in the 200 backstroke (2:10.82).
Following Cooper's win in the 200 breaststroke, Swarthmore took the top spot in the next three races, clinching the dual win with a 1-2 finish by Sophia Lee and Scout Clark in the 200 IM. The Bullets capped the meet with a victory in the 200 free relay as Cooper, senior
Lindsay Hayden (Enfield, Conn./Suffield Academy), freshman
Cate Kosko (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury East), and Crilly raced to the wall in 1:39.63.
