Wrestling Shows Bright Future

The Muhlenberg wrestling team showed signs of a bright future at the Mideast Futures Tournament.

Of the 14 Mules who competed in the tournament in Deitrich Field House, nine won at least two bouts, and 12 won at least one.

The top placewinners for the Mules were freshman Frank DiEsso, who came in second at 133, and freshman Andrew Franklin, who placed fourth at heavyweight.

DiEsso defeated his three opponents with a major decision, a pin in the first minute and a 6-4 decision before opting out of the championship final. The three wins brought DiEsso's season record to 20-5, and he's placed in four tournaments (three at 125 and one at 133).

Franklin (pictured above) earned a tournament place for the third time after going 4-2 in his six bouts. After getting pinned in his second bout by the eventual winner of the bracket, Franklin won three straight bouts in the consolation bracket, one on a major decision and one on a pin. He wrestled a close match in the consolation final, falling 3-1 on a late takedown.

Freshman Fletcher Goodman went 3-2 at 184, losing two close decisions to the third-place finisher. Among his wins were a pin and a technical fall.

Also recording two wins were freshmen Brian McCaw (125), Aidan Weingrad (165) and Sean Quaye (285), sophomore Riley McHale (157) and juniors Jeorcy Peña (141) and Hunter Gill (184). Quaye, McHale and Peña each recorded a pair of falls, with McHale moving into a tie for second place on the team with eight pins this season.

Although he was wrestling unattached, another young Muhlenberg wrestler had an impressive day. Freshman Nico Berlingeri won the 184-pound bracket, capturing four bouts on two pins and two major decisions.
