Incredible Comeback Lifts Bullets at No. 10 Dickinson

Gettysburg Ends Game on 8-0 Run, Wipes Out Seven-Goal Deficit

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team posted one of its top comebacks in recent memory, ending the game on 8-0 run as the fourth-ranked Bullets rallied past No. 10 Dickinson 12-11 in a key Centennial Conference (CC) showdown Wednesday evening at Biddle Field.

Sophomore Michael McCormick (Lorton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) played the role of hero for the Bullets (12-1, 5-0 CC), scoring the team's final two goals, including the game-winner with 58 seconds left. He finished with a career-high four points on three goals and one assist.

Gettysburg (12-1, 5-0 CC) trailed by seven goals twice, including 11-4 with 11:56 left in the third quarter. But that's when the Orange and Blue took over the game, scoring twice in the third quarter and outscoring the Red Devils 6-0 in the final stanza.

The Bullets, who won their sixth straight game, now find themselves alone atop the Centennial Conference standings after entering the night tied for first with Dickinson.

Junior Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) added two goals and two assists for the Bullets while freshman Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School), junior Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence), and junior Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) tallied a pair of goals apiece.

Dickinson (9-3, 3-1 CC) outscored the Bullets 10-4 in the opening half, when it owned a 25-14 shot advantage. However, Gettysburg turned the tables in the second half, when it outshot the Red Devils 32-7 and allowed just one goal.

Sophomore Chris Crowley (Madison, N.J./Delbarton) came off the bench to play the final 36 minutes in goal for the Bullets, finishing with four saves while allowing just three goals to earn his first collegiate win. Sophomore defenseman Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) picked up six ground balls while Harvey added five grounders.

Dylan Maher led Dickinson with five goals while Cole Pellicano made 15 saves.

McCormick tied the game with 3:40 left when he delivered a diving shot in front of the goal. The Devils won the ensuing face-off but turned the ball over with two minutes left as Heller scooped the ground ball to give his team possession. A minute later, McCormick came from behind the crease, took a feed from sophomore Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), and delivered another diving tally to complete the comeback.

Dickinson threatened in the final minute, winning the face-off before calling a timeout with 44 seconds left. The Red Devils then reeled off three shots and nearly tied it on their final attempt, but it slammed off the post and bounced out to midfield as time expired.

The Devils raced to a 4-0 lead 10 minutes into the game before Harvey and McCormick scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit in half with 2:46 left in the opening quarter. However, Dickinson responded with a 6-1 run over a 13-minute stretch to assume a 10-3 advantage with 4:03 left in the opening half. Harvey stopped the bleeding when he struck again with 3:05 on the clock to pull Gettysburg within six at the intermission.

Maher handed the hosts their 11-4 lead before the Bullets went to work. Fletcher kicked off the rally when he finished off a dish from Heller with 9:27 on the third-quarter clock. Kolen struck less than a minute later, and it was still an 11-6 game at the end of the period.

Garstka broke a 10-minute scoring drought when he finished off a dish from McCormick with 10:03 remaining. Heller added an unassisted tally with 8:41 showing, then set up another goal from Garstka with 7:48 left that made it 11-9. Fletcher scored with 5:08 left, setting up McCormick's heroics.

Gettysburg finished with advantages in shots (46-32) and ground balls (29-22) while Dickinson won 15 of 26 face-offs. After committing nine turnovers in the first half, the Bullets had just two in the second half and none in the fourth quarter.

The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, when they host Haverford at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
