Bullets Top McDaniel on Take ALS Yard Day

DeMartino Fires Second Straight Complete Game

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) threw his second-straight complete game, firing an eight-hitter to lead the Gettysburg College baseball team to a 4-2 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over McDaniel on the sixth annual Take ALS Yard Day at a sunny Kirchhoff Field Friday afternoon.

Senior Josh Cubell (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) drove in the go-ahead runs for the Bullets (11-21, 5-11 CC), stroking a two-run single in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Neither side scored the rest of the way in a game that lasted just two hours and 18 minutes.

Cubell finished 2-for-4 while freshman Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) also had a big game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Six days after throwing a four-hitter in a 3-1 victory at Swarthmore, DeMartino (3-4) struck out three and did not walk a batter. He got stronger as the game went on, shutting out the Green Terror over the final six innings and allowing just two hits over the final five innings.

Brad Thaxton (1-4) took the loss for McDaniel (11-17, 4-12 CC), yielding four runs over six innings.

Before the game, a "Take ALS Yard Day" ceremony was held as the Bullets' "Take ALS Yard" efforts were recognized.

Gettysburg wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, plating a pair of runs in the first. Freshman Matt Szczesny (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was hit with a pitch before sophomore Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) reached on an infield single. After senior Logan Sneed (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners, Murphy smashed a rising liner over the outstretched glove of the rightfielder, clearing the bases to make it a 2-0 game.

McDaniel pulled even in the third, scoring twice on three straight two-out singles. But the Bullets answered in the fourth, when Sneed led off with an infield single. Murphy then struck another well-hit ball down the rightfield line to put runners on second and third. Cubell followed up with his decisive hit, drilling a 2-0 pitch up the middle and past a drawn-in infield. Thaxton would prevent further damage, however, retiring the final three batters of the inning.

Cubell nearly added to Gettysburg's lead in the fifth, but his line drive with the bases loaded was hit right into the glove of Thaxton for the final out. Thaxton and two McDaniel relievers combined to shut out the Bullets over the final five innings.

DeMartino settled into a groove from the fifth through the eighth, when he retired nine straight batters and did not allow a runner to reach second. The Green Terror would threaten in the ninth, when Zachary Glover started the inning by reaching on a struck-three wild pitch, but DeMartino ended the game by rolling up three straight ground balls. He ended up throwing 124 pitches while recording his eighth career complete game and his 16th career victory.

Gettysburg wraps up its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, when it visits Haverford for a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
