UMW Softball Splits Saturday Twinbill with Gettysburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Gettysburg College, falling 17-5 in five innings in the opener before winning the nightcap in five, 12-4. The Eagles move to 8-9 on the season.

In the opener, Gettysburg erupted for six runs in the first and four in the third to take command. The Eagles scored three in the fourth as Rachel Porchie reached on an error and scored on another to start the frame. Daylah Sawyer followed with a run on an error, and Hannah Bruns plated another run with a double.

The Eagles scored twice in the fifth. Mabyn Perez tripled and scored on a Porchie sacrifice fly, and Sawyer followed with a solo home run.

In the second game, the Eagle offense came alive, scoring twice in the first after Gettysburg started the game with three runs in the top of the inning. After a single by Hannah Bruns and a walk to Sawyer, Porchie provided a two-run double. In the second, UMW scored when Caitlin Shea singled and scored on a Bruns double.

The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the third, as Porchie stole home after a double, and Shea added an RBI double. In the fourth, Sawyer drove in one run with a single, and Porchie followed with a two-run homer, her third of the year.

The Eagles reached an eight-run cushion in the fifth, as Caroline Bird singled and scored on an error, and Juliet Truslow scored on a wild pitch. After a pair of singles, Danielle Newman singled home one run, and Porchie followed with a sacrifice fly to end the game.

Porchie had two doubles and a home run to go with five RBI, and Bruns added three hits to the 13-hit attack. Shea and Maggie Mrowka each had two hits. Truslow gained the win, allowing three earned runs on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Eagles will host Shenandoah University on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
