GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The youngest members of the Gettysburg College men's swimming team made some noise against Ursinus College, combining for six individual victories to lead the Bullets past the Bears 152-110 Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (5-0, 3-0 CC) maintained its perfect record with wins in 10 of 14 events, including both relays. The day opened with freshmen
Jeff Ragatz (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and
Ogden Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) teaming with junior
Ty Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum School (Del.)) and sophomore
Francisco Nieves (Alexandria, Va./Edison) for a first-place time of 1:36.61 in the 200 medley relay.
Ursinus (2-1, 2-1 CC) kept it close with a victory in the 1000 free by Jake Menzer, but the Bullets ran away by claiming three of the top four positions in each of the next three races. Leyens won the 200 free by nearly three seconds at 1:43.71 and classmate
Adam Dias (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) picked the first of his two wins in the breaststroke events with a time of 1:00.89 in the 100-yard race.
Freshman
Jack Freeman (Haddonfield, N.J./Pennington School) trailed Johnny Myers after 150 yards of the 200 fly, but the first-year out-ran the Bear swimmer in the final length to win in 2:00.48. Freeman completed the fly sweep by claiming the 100 race in 53.43 later in the meet.
Dias cruised to a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke, dusting the field by nearly five seconds at 2:15.05. The first-year also placed second in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:05.44. Leyens added his second win with a time of 4:52.55 in the 500 free.
Dougherty pulled off a back-to-back sweep in the sprint freestyle events, first racing to a win in the 50 free (21.01) before touching the wall first in the 100 free (47.19).
Leyens set the pace in the final event by leading off the 400 free relay. Sophomore
Parker Sorenson (Evergreen, Colo./Homeschooled), senior
Josh Kiehl (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg), and Dougherty finished off the victory with a mark of 3:12.74.
Freshmen
Josh Parker (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) finished runner-up in the 1000 free (9:58.85) and third in the 500 free (4:58.51), while Ragatz placed second in the 100 back (54.44).
Gettysburg closes out the first semester with its own invitational on Dec. 2-3.
