Softball Swept by No. 12 Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va.  – The Gettysburg College softball team closed its spring break trip with a sweep at the hands of No. 12 Randolph-Macon College Saturday afternoon.

Fresh off a pair of extra-inning wins over No. 23 Emory University, Randolph-Macon (15-1) extended its win streak to 15 by pounding out 21 runs and 23 hits against Gettysburg (3-9). The Yellow Jackets won the opener 8-1 before taking the nightcap 13-0 in five innings.

The Bullets scored the opening run of the day as a lead-off walk to sophomore Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) set up freshman Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) for a run-scoring double two batters later.

Randolph-Macon answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame and tacked on five more in the third to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) kept the Yellow Jacket bats at bay over the final three innings, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out two.

Baker accounted for Gettysburg's only hit in game two, lacing a single down the left-field line in the first inning. Sophomore Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) also walked in the inning, but both runners were left stranded as Randolph-Macon pitcher Madie Rhoads picked up a fly out and a strikeout to end the inning.

The Yellow Jackets tallied two runs in their opening at bat before exploding for seven in the second, including three on a home run by Kaitlyn Deeter. Four more tallies came across home plate in the third.

Next up for Gettysburg is its home opener against Stevenson University on Thursday, March 22, at 3 p.m.
