Bullets Head Coach Wins 400th Game at Gettysburg

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Gettysburg broke open a close game with a 6-0 second-half run and the sixth-ranked Bullets earned a 12-6 victory at Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

With the win, Bullet head coach Hank Janczyk registered his 400th career victory at Gettysburg, becoming just the second NCAA men's lacrosse coach to win 400 games at one school. Janczyk now has a career record of 400-116 over 31 years at Gettysburg and 445-140 mark over 36 years overall. He ranks in NCAA men's lacrosse history in career victories.

Freshman Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) and junior Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) pumped in three goals and two assists apiece for Gettysburg (11-1, 4-0 CC), which outshot Swarthmore 51-26. Junior Tommy Heller (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) notched two goals, three assists, and three caused turnovers while sophomore Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) contributed two goals, two assists, and five ground balls. Junior Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) contributed two goals and four grounders.

Senior Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) collected eight saves over 58 minutes of action to lead a Bullet defense that nearly shut out Swarthmore in the fourth quarter, when the Garnet failed to score until the 2:38 mark. Sophomore Chris Crowley (Madison, N.J./Delbarton) stopped two shots in the final two minutes.

Gettysburg finished with a 33-21 advantage in ground balls and won 12 of 22 face-offs, with senior Geoff Fulgione (North Andover, Mass./Brooks School) finishing 11-for-21 at the X.

Austin Chang scored four goals to lead Swarthmore (6-3, 1-2 CC) while John Calia made 14 saves for the Garnet.

The Bullets never trailed after Kolen and Garstka scored one goal apiece in the opening quarter, making it 2-0 after 15 minutes of play. However, Chang answered with a pair of goals early in the second quarter to pull Swarthmore even with 11:36 on the clock. But Gettysburg stormed right back with a 4-0 run to go up 6-2. Fletcher and Garstka kicked off the spurt before Harvey notched back-to-back tallies.

The Garnet struck inside the final minute of the half, slicing the deficit to 6-3 at the intermission, then scored the first two goals of the third quarter to pull to within one. But that's Gettysburg embarked on its decisive run. Four different Bullets scored during the spurt, with Heller and Fletcher each striking twice. Kolen kicked off the outburst with 5:58 left in the third quarter before Heller and Fletcher each converted once to make it a 9-5 game heading into the fourth quarter. Harvey, Fletcher ,and Heller each tallied in the final stanza as the Bullets claimed a 12-5 advantage with 3:43 left before Change set the final score.
