Scots Win Back-to-Back to Open Spring Trip

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Wooster women's tennis team took two wins in two days to open its spring break trip in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

On Wednesday the team swept Edgewood College 9-0 before scraping by to defeat Washington College 5-4 on Thursday.

There were a number of close matches against Edgewood, but Wooster prevailed in all of them. 

In doubles play, it was the No. 2 flight where Kim Nguyen and Charitha Patlolla won a tiebreaker in an 8-7 (2) win. Meanwhile, the No. 1 team Otilia Oita and Janaki Jagannathan won 8-4, and the No. 3 team of Katie Materick and Abby Williams won 8-2.

Four of the six singles flights won in straight sets while the No. 1 and No. 6 flights were decided in super tiebreakers.

Oita took the No. 1 flight 7-5, 2-6, 1-0, and Abby Aitken won in the No. 6 slot 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (4).

Jagannathan won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 flight, and Nguyen won 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 3 flight. Williams won 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 flight, and Materick took a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 5 slot.

Against Washington, Wooster jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Oita and Jagannathan won its No. 1 match 8-5, while Patlolla and Materick won 8-2 in the No. 2 flight. Williams and Abby Kushner Benson fell 8-3 in the No. 3 flight.

In singles play, Oita took a 6-3, 6-4 loss, but Jagannathan fought for a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win at No. 2. Wooster's other two wins came at the No. 3 and No. 6 flights. Patlolla won 6-2, 7-5, and Materick won 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (3) in the third and sixth flights, respectively.

The Scots are now 7-3 and will face three more teams on its trip, beginning with Union College (NY) on Saturday.
