No. 22 Garnet Edged In Clash With No. 4 Blue Jays

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—No. 22 Swarthmore College Women's Soccer battled with the No. 4 Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays on Saturday but fell by a final score of 2-1.

The loss was just the first in Centennial Conference action for the Garnet this year (4-1-1 Centennial). Johns Hopkins improved to 7-0 in Centennial action. Swarthmore is just the second team to score a goal against the Blue Jays in league play this year.

Swarthmore held a slight advantage in total shots, 10-8, and in shots on goal, 5-4. Marin McCoy led Swarthmore with four attempts and one on goal. Six other Garnet players took an attempt. Seneca Kinn-Gurzo had one of the closest attempts on goal when in the 65th minute her line drive shot was denied by the fingertips of Hopkins' diving goalkeeper.

Both teams registered three corner kicks.

Hopkins scored early on, connecting with the back of the net in the fourth minute.

Swarthmore found the equalizer in the 38th minute. Louise Rosler, fresh into the contest off the bench, sent a pass into the box from the right side of the field. The pass located Brittany Weiderhold between a pair of defenders and she rose up and snapped a header to her left, tucking it inside the right post.

Weiderhold now has five goals on the year, second most on the team this year.

The teams remained tied until the 77th minute when Hopkins scored the eventual game-winning goal from close range.

Swarthmore returns to action on the road on Tuesday at Bryn Mawr College for a 4 p.m. game.
