CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Junior
Ty Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) and freshman
Ogden Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) each contributed to four victories and combined for three pool records as the Gettysburg College men's swimming team opened its 2016-17 season with a bang, winning 160-102 at Centennial Conference foe Washington College on Saturday.
The Bullets, the defending Centennial Conference champions, won nine of 14 events and took second in six others to avenge a season-opening loss to the Shoremen last season.
Dougherty picked up right where he left off last season, when he earned three All-America honors and was the Centennial Conference Male Outstanding Performer. After swimming the breaststroke leg of the winning 200-medley relay (1:37.28), he won by over a second in the 50-freestyle (20.89) before touching first the 100-freestyle (46.74), setting pool records in both individual events. He finished his big day by leading off for the winning 400-freestyle relay (3:14.09).
Leyens enjoyed an outstanding collegiate debut, earning victories in all four of his swims. He anchored the victorious 200-medley relay before posting a pair of dominant performances in the 200-freestyle (1:43.86) and 500-freestyle (4:48.36), winning by over six seconds in both events and breaking the pool record in the 200. The younger brother of former Gettysburg All-American Ashton Leyens '15, he closed out the afternoon by anchoring the 400-free relay.
Freshmen
Adam Dias (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and
Josh Parker (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) also made big first impressions, combining to win three events. Dias captured both the 100-breaststroke (1:00.96) and the 200-breaststroke (2:14.64) while Parker claimed the 1,000-freestyle (9:59.56) and took second in the 500 (4:54.71).
Another first-year,
Jeff Ragatz (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield), swam the leadoff backstroke leg for the winning 200-medley relay while junior
Ian Schrock (State College, Pa./State College) swam the butterfly leg in the same event. Schrock was also part of the winning 400-free relay along with sophomore
Parker Sorenson (Evergreen, Colo./home-schooled).
Adding runner-up finishes were senior
Josh Kiehl (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) in the 200-freestyle (1:50.22) and the 200-IM (2:04.91), Ragatz in the 100-backstroke (54.91), freshman
Alex Howard (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) in the 200-butterfly (2:06.02), and freshman
Jack Freeman (Haddonfield, N.J./Pennington School) in the 100-butterfly (55.06).
Gettysburg returns to the pool next Saturday for its home opener. The Bullets will take on Messiah College and Susquehanna University in a non-conference meet starting at 1 p.m.
