Eight seniors, four home runs and two wins combined to make it one memorable Senior Day for the Muhlenberg baseball team.

The Mules swept Washington College, 7-5 and 8-1, to extend their winning streak to four and climb into the thick of the Centennial Conference playoff race. To top it off, the win in the second game was the 100th for head coach Tod Gross.

With five games remaining in the regular season, Muhlenberg (15-16, 7-6) is in fifth place in the CC, a game behind Franklin & Marshall for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Mules travel to F&M for their last doubleheader of the regular season next Saturday.

After coming from behind from five runs down to win the opener, Muhlenberg used the long ball - and outstanding pitching from sophomore Matthew D'Ambrosia - to finish off their first doubleheader sweep of the Shoremen (23-13, 7-7) in 10 years.

The Mules belted four home runs to account for all their runs in the nightcap. Junior Matt Riebesell belted a two-run homer in the first, junior Jon Capra hit a three-run blast to break the game open in the fifth, senior Eric Reitmeyer smacked a solo shot in the sixth, and junior Chris Grillo put the icing on the cake with a two-run round-tripper in the eighth.

It was the first four-homer game for the Mules - who came into the game with six all season - since they tied a school record with five against Dickinson in 2015. The sixth-inning home run was the first in the career of Reitmeyer, who was honored prior to the doubleheader along with fellow seniors Taylor Vazquez, Troy Vazquez, Austin Disher, Charlie Lekkas, Sam Kasten, Jake Picker and Timmy Pilrun.

D'Ambrosia worked the first eight innings and fanned 11 to earn his fourth win of the season. The big righty gave up just five hits and allowed more than one baserunner in only one inning. 

Six of Muhlenberg's 12 hits went for extra bases, with Grillo and sophomore Brenden Weiss adding triples to the four-home barrage.

The first game started with Washington needing only three batters to score its first run. The Shoremen added four in the third, the big hit a pop-fly single into shallow center field that allowed three runs to score.

Down 5-0 to a pitcher who threw a no-hitter in his last start, the Mules began their comeback in the bottom of the third when Grillo led off with a double and scored on a single by sophomore John Serruto.

In the sixth, Grillo hit a two-run double - one of his four extra-base hits on the day - to make the score 5-3. Freshman Robert Cappadona singled in Grillo, and three batters later sophomore Billy Brittingham hit a two-out single to bring in Cappadona with the tying run.

Reitmeyer singled with one out in the seventh, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Another two-out RBI single by Brittingham brought in an insurance run in the eighth.

Junior RJ Hennessey settled down to pitch his fourth complete game of the season. After the four-run rally in the third, Hennessey allowed only three baserunners the rest of the game in improving to 5-3 on the season. He finished with seven strikeouts in his eight-hit performance.
