Game Recap: Football |

Football Wins OT Thriller

Junior Todd Spirt kicked his third field goal of the game, a 37-yarder, in the first overtime period to give the Muhlenberg football team a 37-34 win at Susquehanna.

It was the fourth straight three-point game the Mules (2-0, 2-0) played against the River Hawks (2-1, 1-1), who sat just outside the D3football.com top 25 following their win against Johns Hopkins last week.

Muhlenberg held a 34-13 lead in the third quarter, but Susquehanna scored the final 21 points of regulation to force overtime.

The River Hawks had the first overtime possession and were called for two long penalties, setting the ball back to midfield. They advanced back to the 25 on third down, but their 42-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright.

The Mules ran only three plays on their possession, including a 7-yard completion from sophomore Michael Hnatkowsky to junior Max Kirin, before bringing on Spirt to boot the winner.

Sophomore James Diggs rushed for a game-high 82 yards and a pair of scores, including a 27-yarder to get the Mules on the board with 8:57 left in the first quarter. Muhlenberg made it 14-0 on its next possession when Hnatkowsky hit junior Ryan Curtiss with a 33-yard scoring pass.

Sophomore Nick Sirico intercepted a pass for the second straight week two plays later, and on the first play after the turnover, sophomore wide receiver Thomas Murphy completed a 39-yard pass to sophomore Nick Ugarte. The trick play set up Spirt's first field goal, making it 17-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Junior Mark Riggio scored on an 8-yard run in the second quarter to increase the lead to 24-0, but a TD pass on the final play of the half brought the River Hawks to within 24-7.

The teams traded scores early in the third quarter, with freshman Gabe Robles returning the kickoff after Susquehanna's touchdown 49 yards to set up Diggs' second TD.

The River Hawks missed the extra point following their second touchdown, which proved to be crucial when they scored the final three touchdowns of regulation. A touchdown with 6:30 left tied the score, and neither team threatened on their two remaining possessions.

Kirin caught six passes for 116 yards, recording his first career 100-yard game. Ugarte also hauled in six balls.

The Mules have won their last three overtime games. This was the first they ever won on a "walkoff" field goal.
