Softball Claims Sweep of Haverford in Home Debut

Gettysburg knocks off Fords 1-0 and 4-3

GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – Senior Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) threw a five-hit shutout in the opening game and freshman Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) went 3-for-3 with two RBI in the nightcap to lead Gettysburg College to a pair of wins over Haverford College in Centennial Conference softball action at Bobby Jones Field on Saturday.

After a number of postponements delayed its home debut, Gettysburg (9-9, 6-0 CC) capitalized on the home-field advantage with a pair of one-run victories. Reilly allowed only one runner to reaching scoring position in her first shutout of the season as part of a 1-0 decision in the opener against Haverford (11-7, 3-3 CC). Baker finished just a home run shy of the cycle to spark the Bullets to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in game two.

The Orange and Blue did all of the scoring in the opening inning of game one. Singles by junior Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) and Baker and a walk to freshman Brooke Studnik (Miami, Fla./D. Michael M. Krop) loaded the bases with two outs. Sophomore Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) came through with a single up the middle to plate the leader runner and give Reilly all the offensive support she would need.

Gettysburg's senior pitcher allowed a one-out double to Jess Koshinski in the second inning, but the runner was quickly erased on a heads-up play by the defense. Emma Souter grounded to Blasius at shortstop who fired over to first base for the first out. Koshinski took off for third on the throw, but Studnik quickly tossed it across the diamond for the third out of the inning.

The Fords did not put more than one runner on the base paths in any inning against Reilly, who finished with two strikeouts and forced 11 ground-outs in the contest.

Baker finished 2-for-3 and Blasius finished 2-for-2 in the first game.

Temma Levis was hit with the loss despite going six strong innings and giving up six hits. Levis struck out five and walked two. Rachel Wolfson and Koshinski each posted two hits.

After an error-free opening contest, the Bullets committed four errors in the top of the first inning of game two. Haverford took advantage with three runs scoring without the benefit of a hit.

Gettysburg was unable to cash in on a bases-loaded situation in the first inning and Baker was left stranded at second base following a double in the third inning. Baker finally cracked the egg in the fifth, stroking a two-out triple to right-center to plate a pair of runs and cut Haverford's lead to 3-2.

The Fords were unable to generate any more offense over the final six innings. Sophomore McKenzie Somers (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) allowed only one hit before giving gave way to junior Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) after three innings. Clauser blanked the visitors over the final four frames, allowing just one hit and striking out three to pick up the victory.

The Bullets scored the last two runs in their final at bat. Studnik led off the sixth inning with her second hit of the game. Following a passed ball, sophomore Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) plated the game-tying run with a single. Cowell would later advance to third on a passed ball and score the winning run on a wild pitch.

Gettysburg returns to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Dickinson College at home beginning at 1 p.m.
