Hopkins Claims Wins Over Rutgers-Camden, 7-3, and #11 Cortland St., 7-5

The Blue Jays Came from Behind in Both Victories

GAME ONE
•  Score: Hopkins – 7, Rutgers-Camden - 3
• Records: Hopkins (3-1) • Rutgers-Camden (0-2)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium
• Pitching Decision: W – Preston Betz (2-0) • L- Steven Bloyed (0-1) • S – Josh Hejka (1)
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins baseball team got another solid pitching performance from Preston Betz as the Blue Jays defeated Rutgers-Camden, 7-3 on Saturday afternoon in the Baltimore Invitational.

How it Happened
• Betz got into an early jam in the top of the first as RJ Concepcion doubled to center with one out and advanced to third on a Matthew Stoots single. Betz then got Mike Yanick to hit into a 4-6-3 double play and end the inning.
• Frank Clara put the Blue Jays up 1-0 in the bottom of second with a long blast to left field for his first homer of the season. An inning later, Mike Eberle gave JHU a 2-0 lead with his second homer of the year as he took the Steven Bloyed pitch over the left field wall.
• The Raptors took the lead on a three-run shot by Chris Jones in the top of the fourth with one out in the inning, but Betz and the Blue Jays got out of the inning without any more runs crossing the plate.
• Hopkins responded in the bottom of the inning putting up three runs to regain the lead. Chris Festa doubled home two runs and then scored on an RC error to give JHU a 5-3 lead. Hopkins added another run in the sixth as Matthew Ritchie crossed the plate on a balk.
• Festa wrapped up the scoring for Hopkins with an RBI groundout in the eighth as Josh Hejka closed the door on Rutgers-Camden and Hopkins took the 7-3 victory.

Inside the Box Score
• Eberle led Hopkins with three hits in the game as the junior went 3-4. Festa finished with a team-leading three RBIs.
• Betz went seven innings allowing just the three runs on five hits. He struck out six and gave up no walks for the second straight start.
• Hejka pitched two innings allowing no runs, no hits, no walks and struck out three.

GAME TWO
• Score: JHU – 7, Cortland - 5
• Records: JHU (4-1) • #11 Cortland St. (3-3-1)
• Pitching Decision: W – Jack Bunting (1-0) • L – Isiah Hudson (0-1) • S- Seamus Ryan-Johnson
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins baseball team completed the doubleheader sweep with a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over #11 Cortland on Saturday night.

How it Happened
• Cortland got on the scoreboard first as a Wyatt Myers single to center plated two runs and another run would score on an error to put the Red Dragons up 3-0. Cortland got another run in the fourth on a Mat Bruno solo shot to take a 4-0 lead.
• The Blue Jays started their rally in the fifth as Hopkins worked three straight walks to load the bases with no outs. Bradley Parsons hit a sacrifice fly to plate Chris DeGiacomo and Eberle followed with an RBI single which scored Ritchie. Frank Clara then doubled home Robby Faris, as Hopkins pulled to within one. Eberle and Clara scored on an error and with the bases loaded, Ritchie worked a walk to score Austin Sacks as JHU scored six runs in the inning to take a two-run lead.
• Hopkins added an insurance run in the seventh as AJ King scored on a throwing error to make it a 7-4 ball game.
• The Red Dragons pulled to within two as Myers hit a solo shot to left to open the eighth. With a runner on first and no outs, Seamus Ryan-Johnson entered the game and got a double play ball on his first pitch. Bruno then singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, but Ryan-Johnson got Paul Franzese swinging to end the inning. Ryan-Johnson then retired Cortland in order in the top of the ninth as Hopkins took the 7-5 victory.

Inside the Box Score
• Eberle finished this game 2-3 with two walks and an RBI.
• Bunting earned his first win on the season as the senior went five innings allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks. He struck out six batters in the game.
• Jonah Offman and Ryan-Johnson pitched the remaining four innings combining to allow four hits, one run, no walks and six strikeouts.

What it Means
• Hopkins is now 4-3 against Rutgers-Camden all-time. The Scarlet Raptors had won the last three meetings.
• The Blue Jays improve to 3-4 against the Red Dragons as Hopkins has won the last three meetings.
• Hopkins pitchers have not allowed a walk in three straight games.

• The Blue Jays return to Babb Field tomorrow, Sunday, March 3 for a 10:30 am game against Cortland.
