Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls in Heartbreaker

The Muhlenberg field hockey team tied the game in the second half, but fell to Elizabethtown, 2-1, in a penalty shootout.

The game was the first for the Mules since overtime periods were shortened from 15 to 10 minutes, as well as their first shootout. They last played a game that was tied through overtime in 2010, when the tie was broken through penalty strokes.

Senior Stephi Rydgren extended the penalty shootout to six rounds when the officials deemed her shot entered the cage right before time expired, tying the shootout at 4-4. Elizabethtown scored the game-winning shot in the sixth round after Muhlenberg's shot was saved.

In the first half of play, the Mules (0-3) held a 5-0 penalty corners advantage and controlled most of the possession but were unable to produce many offensive chances. Junior Courtney Allen tied the game in the 55th minute from the left side of the circle, securing sophomore Jordyn Kamis' accurate pass and sending the ball into the back of the cage.

The Blue Jays (3-1) scored the game's first goal less than two minutes into the second half.

Junior Jordan Segrave (pictured above) saved four shots, including three Elizabethtown chances in double overtime to force the game into a shootout.
