Bears score final 42 points in 42-7 decision

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.  – The Gettysburg College football team was upended in its Centennial Conference opener as Ursinus College scored the final 42 points in a 42-7 decision at Patterson Field Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (0-2, 0-1 CC) was out-gained by Ursinus (2-0, 1-0 CC) 506-117 and committed four turnovers in the game.

Sophomore quarterback Mike Welsh (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) posted 53 yards rushing on 19 carries for the Bullets. Senior Jake Skinner (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) led the defense with 10 tackles, while classmate Logan Aikey (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) recorded nine tackles, three tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Jack Humphries (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) posted nine stops.

Sophomore punter Evan Tannenbaum (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) set a program standard with 448 total yards on 11 punts for an average of 40.7 yards per attempt. He placed four punts inside the Bears' 20-yard line with a long of 56 yards.

Ursinus quarterback Thomas Garlick completed 20-of-33 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns. Six of those passes went to Ryan Loughlin who totaled 113 receiving yards. Samuel Ragland and Stacey Gardner combined for 150 yards out of the backfield with Ragland finding the end zone four times.

Gettysburg struck first when Aikey punched the ball away from Gardner and the Bullets recovered the ball deep in Ursinus territory. The visitors found the end zone four plays later as junior Andrew Howard (Swansea, Mass./Moses Brown School) broke the plane on a one-yard plunge. The extra point made it 7-0 with 4:22 left in the first quarter.

Ursinus scored its first touchdown following a fumble by the Bullets at the end of the first quarter. The Bears utilized the short field for a 16-yard pass from Garlick to Tom Cardozo six seconds into the second period. The hosts scored on their next possession to take a 14-7 lead at the break.

The Ursinus defense forced Gettysburg to punt on eight consecutive possessions leading up to the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Ragland scored on a pair of 10-yard runs to push the lead to 28-7 at the end of the third period. The Bears' final two touchdowns followed turnovers by the Bullets.

Next up for Gettysburg is a road trip to Carlisle, Pa., to face long-time rival Dickinson College on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1:30 p.m. in the annual showdown for the Little Brown Bucket. The two teams have first met in 1892 and Gettysburg holds a 44-37-2 lead in the series. The last three meetings have each been decided by three points with the Red Devils winning the last two.
