CLAREMONT, Calif.—No. 31 Swarthmore College Men's ended its California spring break trip with a challenging Stag-Hen Invitational Tournament with matches against three nationally-ranked opponents.
The Garnet fell 6-3 to No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer and 7-2 to No. 38 Southwestern on Friday. The Garnet dropped the final match against No 12 Gustavus Adolphus 8-1 on Saturday.
Swarthmore 3, Pomona-Pitzer 6
The Garnet won a pair of matches in doubles, taking the top two flights.
Jiung Jung and
Thibault Vernier beat Pomona-Pitzer's top duo 8-5.
John Lathrop and
Evan Han worked together in second doubles for an 8-4 win.
Han also won his singles match in sixth singles 6-2, 7-6.
Noah Criss and
Simon Vernier battled in their singles matches, forcing a third set, but couldn't come home with the win.
Swarthmore 2, Southwestern 7
The Garnet were shut out in doubles by an underrated Southwestern team.
Jung, after falling behind in the top singles match with a 6-2 loss in the first set, rallied for a 6-1 second set win and a 6-3 win in the third to clinch it.
Han earned another win at fifth singles, winning 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 in the super breaker.
Both
Thibault Vernier and
Simon Vernier forced a third set in their singles matches, but fell just short.
Swarthmore 1, Gustavus Adolphus 8
Swarthmore's lone win against the Gusties came in sixth singles with
Evan Han winning 6-2, 6-2. Han went 3-0 in singles matches in the Stag-Hen Invitational.
The Garnet travel to Massachusetts next weekend for matches at Brandeis University and Amherst College.
