Late Run Lifts York to 78-72 in over Johns Hopkins

Kern and Johnson Score 17 Points Each

The Basics
• Score: York-78, #15 Johns Hopkins-72
• Records: JHU (1-1) • YCP (2-0)
• Location: York, PA • Wolf Gymnasium
• The Short Story: Host York used a late 7-1 run to defeat the 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball, 78-72, on Sunday afternoon in a match-up of two 20-win, NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.

How it Happened
• With the game tied at 71 with 73 seconds remaining, the Spartans' Jared Wagner drained a three-pointer to put York on top, for good it turned out. The Blue Jays came up empty on the next possession and the Spartans got a Jason Bady old-fashioned three-point play on the other end to push the lead to six with 21 seconds on the clock. The teams then traded free throws in the final 12 seconds and York grabbed the win.
• Hopkins jumped out to an 11-point lead in the game's opening two minutes, fueled by three triples from senior Michael Gardner and sophomore Joey Kern. Bady got York on the board at the 16:43-mark with a jumper in the paint to spark a 15-0 run, capped by a Darin Gordon dunk three and a half minutes later.
• Freshman Braeden Johnson ended the run with a bucket from downtown at 12:53, cutting the Spartans' lead to one at 15-14. The teams traded buckets over the remainder of the half as neither team was able to take more than a four-point lead. Gardner answered a Joey Polczynski three-pointer with a bucket in the paint in the waning seconds of the half and Hopkins took a 43-41 lead into the lockerroom.
• Kern opened the second half with a three to push the Blue Jays' lead to five and the teams were off and running. The second half was a back-and-forth affair as the teams traded punches and neither team could pull away. The largest lead, until that late run by the Spartans, was just five and came in the first 90 seconds of the half.

What it Means
• Hopkins falls 1-6 all-time against York and loses its second straight in the series.
