SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's cross country team kicked off the season with a twilight run at the Ninth Annual Galen Piper Alumni Open/Cross Country Challenge hosted by Shippensburg University Friday night.
Impressively, the seven scoring runners for Gettysburg all finished with 40 seconds of each other, with the top five separated by just 19 seconds. Sophomore
Michelle O'Malley (Locust, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) led the way in 28th with a time of 16:38.0. Senior
Colleen Campbell (Erie, Pa./Collegiate Academy) finished 5.2 seconds behind in 31st, while freshman
Amy Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) cruised the 4,000-meter lighted course in 16:49.3 to place 36th.
Freshman
Kathrin O'Brien (Lynchburg, Va./Virginia Episcopal School) came in 39th (16:54.1), just two spots in front of senior
Margot Hoagland (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) who finished in 16:57.2. Rounding out the top scorers for the Bullets were senior
Danielle DeMichael (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and freshman
Ashlyn Booher (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) in 47th (17:10.1) and 53rd (17:17.2), respectively.
As a team, Gettysburg placed sixth. No. 18 Dickinson College earned top honors with 29 points, while host Shippensburg was second with 70.
Gettysburg hosts the Little Three Meet with Dickinson and Franklin & Marshall College next Friday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m.
