Women’s Lacrosse Shuts Down Denison

Top-ranked Bullets defeat Big Red 14-4

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Steph Colson (Westminster, Md./Manchester Valley) posted four goals and the defensive unit shut down Denison University's high-powered attack as top-ranked Gettysburg College ran past the Big Red 14-4 in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Clark Field Sunday.

Denison (1-2) had scored 39 goals in its previous two games, but the visitors found the way blocked by a stout Gettysburg (3-0) back line. The Bullets forced the Big Red into 23 turnovers in the game, including 10 on clear attempts and allowed only 15 shots.

Colson filled the scoresheet with four goals, one assist, one ground ball, six draw controls, and four caused turnovers. The senior also grabbed the 200th draw control of her career, making her just the fifth Gettysburg player to reach the milestone. Junior Courtney Patterson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and sophomore Kerry McKeever (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) each tossed in three goals with the former also tracking down four draw controls. Senior Lauren Cole (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) posted two goals and an assist and junior Liza Barr (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) dished out four helpers.

Junior Daphne Budd (Darien, Conn./Darien) tallied a career-high four caused turnovers to go with two ground balls and two draw controls for the Gettysburg defense. Senior Brooke Holechek (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) logged three caused turnovers, while junior Claire Macatee (Street, Md./North Harford) corralled six ground balls. Senior goalie Bailey Pilder (Rowayton, Conn./New Canaan) posted six saves.

Hope Adams led Denison with two goals. Jane Goodspeed totaled four ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers, while Hannah Magarian recorded six saves in the goal.

Adams posted the game's first goal, but the Gettysburg defense came up with stops on each of Denison's next three possessions, including a save by Pilder and a pair of failed clears. Patterson scored just over five minutes into the game on a feed from Colson, kicking off a six-goal run by the Bullets. Three of the tallies came on free-position shots, including the last by McKeever with 13: 16 left in the half.

Gettysburg won each of the final four draws of the first period and converted twice on shots by Patterson for an 8-2 advantage.

Colson tossed in the first two goals of the second half to push the lead to 10-2. The Big Red converted off a turnover to pull it to 10-3 before another three-goal spurt by the hosts capped by junior Ella Orzechowski (Elkridge, Md./Howard) put the running clock rule into effect with 17 minutes to play. Denison halted the clock temporarily on an advantage goal by Liza Farnham, but a tally by McKeever set the final score with 9:26 remaining.

Gettysburg finished with a 25-15 lead in shots, while Denison led in ground balls 25-17. The Bullets won 14-of-20 draws and finished 18-of-20 on clears.
