No. 24 Wrestling Tops No. 21 Castleton and No. 12 WPI at WPI Duals

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 17, 2018)  – Senior Joey Borai, junior Troy Stanich and sophomore Brett Kaliner each won three bouts as No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling defeated No. 21 Castleton University and No. 12 Worcester Polytechnic Institute Saturday at the WPI Duals.

The Ducks were unable to complete a sweep of the afternoon, falling to No. 14 Roger Williams University in the middle match of the day.

"It doesn't matter who we are competing against, our mindset is to wrestle our match and win," sahd head coach Joe Favia. "Regardless of which dual we wrestled today, there were opportunities left on the table. We need to eliminate our mistakes and execute at the highest level every time."

"We have a young and talented group, but they have to learn how to compete [within] our style" Favia continued. "I am confident that we will get there quickly."

Stevens opened the day with a 25-12 victory over the 21st-ranked Spartans, earning victories in seven of the 10 bouts. After freshman Akhil Vega dropped a 6-2 decision at 125 in the first bout of the day, Stevens reeled off five consecutive victories to take control of the dual. Borai took a hard-fought, one-point decision over Deyker Edwards at 133 to tie the match, before Stanich won a technical fall over Max Tempel at 141 to give the Ducks an 8-3 lead. The second-ranked wrestler at 141, Stanich was leading 16-0 at the time of the stoppage.

Kaliner, the nation's second-ranked wrestler at 149, picked up his second pin of the year with a third-period fall over Cooper Fleming. Senior Michael Derin made it four straight victories with a 5-2 decision over Daniel Haverty. Junior Stephen Friedman picked up his third win of the year with a 15-8 decision victory over Mason LaFlam to close out the Stevens run.

Freshman Robert Gennat battled through three periods before falling to Chance LaPier, 5-4, in a sudden victory period, but freshman Michael Dooley earned his first collegiate victory with a technical fall over Alexander Green (18-2) to give Stevens a 25-6 advantage. Castleton earned decision wins at 197 and 285 to provide the final margin of victory.

In the middle dual of the day, the Ducks dropped a close 24-18 decision to Roger Williams, with the teams splitting the 10 matches.

The contest got off to an explosive start with each side earning a pin over the first three bouts of the dual. Kyle Kaiser began the fireworks by pinning Vega at 125, while Stanich pinned Michael Clymer in 90 seconds for his second pin of the year. In between, Borai took a 5-2 decision over Jon Mejia to give Stevens a 9-6 lead.

Kaliner extended the Ducks' lead to six with a 9-4 decision victory over Jack Kelley, but Tyler Gazaway defeated junior Dylan Van Sickell via technical fall (22-7) to trim Stevens' lead to one. 

Roger Williams regained the lead with a decision victory at 165 and a major decision at 174, before Dooley earned a 6-3 decision win at 184 for his second victory of the day to pull Stevens to within three (18-15).

Anthony Malfitano pinned sophomore Colin Myles to clinch the match for the Hawks, but sophomore Joseph Moreno defeated Adam Patsun via a 7-3 decision for his first victory of the season and to provide the final score.

In the final dual of the day, Stevens earned victories in each of the first four bouts en route to a 21-19 victory over the 12th-ranked Engineers.

Freshman Akhil Vega opened the dual with his first collegiate victory, earning a major decision over Christian Chadwick, 17-3. 

Borai earned a 6-2 decision over Andrew Ellis and Stanich earned his second fall of the day, pinning Zach Harris in 62 seconds. Kaliner closed out the stretch with a technical fall over Peter Nash to push Stevens' lead to 18-0. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native was leading 19-4 at the time of the stoppage.

The Engineers trimmed the Stevens lead to 18-10 with a major decision at 157 and a pin at 165, before freshman Robert Genat won by decision over Brendan Marion for his first collegiate victory to give the Ducks a 21-10 advantage.

No. 9 Dan Wensley earned a 3-1 decision over Dooley at 184 and Tyler Wilson and Austin Shrewsbury won decisions at 197 and 285 to provide the final margin of victory.

Over the last four seasons, wrestling is 45-6 in duals, with 13 duals along with the Ursinus' North/South Duals event remaining on the schedule.
