Mike Harmon (Shippensburg, Pa./home-schooled) and
Ashton Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) won two individual events apiece as the 19th-ranked Gettysburg College men's swimming team kept its perfect record intact with a 151-108 victory over the University of Mary Washington in a non-conference meet on Saturday.
Competing for the first time since Dec. 6, the Bullets (6-0) ran their dual-meet winning streak to 18, won eight of 14 events, including a trio of 1-2-3 sweeps.
Harmon touched first in both the 100-backstroke (52.83) and the 200-IM (2:01.67). Leyens helped the Bullets open up a gap early by leading a sweep in the 200-freestyle (1:45.99), and he was followed by sophomore
Josh Kiehl (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) (1:48.56) and junior
Zach Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) (1:52.93). Leyens also added a victory in the 100-freestyle (47.40), edging out teammate
Jason Potter (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), who finished in 47.72.
Also capturing individual victories were freshman
Tyler Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) in the 100-breaststroke (1:00.85), junior
Tyler Gould (Darien, Conn./Darien) in the 100-butterfly (53.26), and sophomore
Ian Schrock (State College, Pa./State College), who led a sweep in the 200-butterfly. Schrock clocked a 2:05.10 and was followed by Gould (2:06.38) and junior
Kevin Hartnett (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) (2:10.79).
The 200-freestyle relay team rallied to win the final event of the meet, as Dougherty, Gould, Leyens, and Potter prevailed in 1:26.15. Alex Anderson, last year's Men's Swimmer of the Meet at the NCAA Division III Championships, gave the Eagles a 0.82-second advantage after the leadoff leg; however, Gould erased the deficit in the second leg and the Bullets pulled away to win by 0.63 seconds.
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action next Saturday, when it hosts Swarthmore College at 2 p.m.
