Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Garnet Nipped In OT By Eagles

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Soccer out-shot the visiting Eastern University Eagles 18-6 in Wednesday night's non-conference tilt. However, the shots simply did not fall the way Swarthmore wanted them to and the Garnet were kept off the scoreboard in a 1-0 overtime loss.

Thirteen different Garnet players registered shot attempts with several shots landing just barely off the mark.

In the 10th minute, Ethan Witkowski stole the ball off Eastern's goalkeeper's clearance attempt, but the deflection off Witkowski missed wide right. Swarthmore got two more opportunities in the final 10 seconds of the first half. Charley Ward's bouncing shot from outside the box was stopped with a diving save, and Joey Bradley's attempt on the rebound was denied as well.

In the second half, in the 74th minute, Conor Gill had a shot stopped on a diving save near the right post. Trevor Homstad had one of the best attempts of the night five minutes later. After receiving a cross from the left wing, Homstad took a chance at chipping in the ball into the upper right corner from about 10 yards out. However, his shot plunked off the crossbar and out of harm's way.

Swarthmore closed out its second half attack with a header off a corner by freshman Harry Nevins that slipped to the outside of the left post in the 87th minute.

Eastern scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute, terminating a ball that had zig-zagged from left wing to right box back to the left post with a sliding finish.

Swarthmore freshman Ian Withy-Berry, making his first start in place of the injured Oliver Steinglass, took the loss.
The Garnet look to bounce back on Saturday with the Centennial Conference opener at Dickinson College in a 3:30 p.m. game.
