Johns Hopkins' Bunting Earns Academic All-America Honors

2019 CoSIDA/Google Cloud Division III Academic All-America Team

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins senior pitcher Jack Bunting, who recently helped the Blue Jay baseball team to a third-place finish at the Division III World Series, has been named to the CoSIDA/Google Cloud Division III Academic All-America Baseball Team. Bunting earned Second Team Academic All-America honors.

Bunting graduated on May 23rd with degrees in international studies and political science and carried a 3.76 cumulative GPA.  He was previously named to the CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic All-District Team and has been named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll in each of his three seasons at Johns Hopkins.

Bunting is the 29th CoSIDA Academic All-American in Johns Hopkins baseball history.  The 29 Academic All-Americans the Blue Jays have produced are tied for the most ever by a baseball program at any level of the NCAA.  Notre Dame and Bucknell have also produced 29 all-time Academic All-Americans in baseball.

On the mound, Bunting enjoyed one of the great seasons in school history by a Blue Jay pitcher in 2019.  He finished with a 13-0 record and a 2.33 ERA with 75 strikeouts against just 10 walks in 85.0 innings pitched; the opposition hit just .253 against him this season.

Bunting's 13 wins this season are a Johns Hopkins single-season record and were the most of any Division III pitcher in the nation in 2019.  He was the only Division III pitcher in the nation with more than 11 or more wins that didn't suffer a loss and he also finished in the top 25 in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (T13th - 7.5:1) and walks allowed per nine innings (25th / 1.06).

This is the 22nd time a Johns Hopkins baseball player has earned ABCA All-America honors.  Bunting is the first Blue Jay pitcher since Sam Eagleson in 2010 to be named to the team and the ninth overall since Frank Parreira became the first Johns Hopkins pitcher to earn ABCA All-America honors in 1980.

Johns Hopkins finished the 2019 season with a record of 37-13 and claimed its 15th Centennial Conference title before winning NCAA Regional and Super Regional crowns to earn the program's fourth trip to the Division III World Series.  There, the Blue Jays went 2-2 to tie for third place.  The third-place finish is tied for the second best in school history.
