BALTIMORE, MD – The 16th ranked Johns Hopkins football team ran its winning streak to eight games on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Jays topped visiting McDaniel, 42-17.  The win secures a share of a 10th straight Centennial Conference title for Johns Hopkins, which also clinched the league's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Playoffs with the victory.

On a blustery day at Homewood, the Blue Jays outscored the Green Terror 28-3 in the second and third quarters combined to turn a 7-7 tie at the end of the first quarter into a 35-10 lead at the end of the third.  Surprisingly, the Blue Jays did all that damage in the two quarters they were going into the wind.

After forcing the Green Terror to punt into the stiff wind late in the first quarter, the Blue Jays took over at the McDaniel 29.  Four plays later, senior Stuart Walters went in from one yard out to give Johns Hopkins a 14-7 lead early in the second period; as it turned out, it was a lead the Jays would never relinquish.

The Blue Jays (9-1, 8-1 CC) made it three touchdowns on their first four possessions after halting McDaniel's next drive on downs.  Taking over from their 34, the Blue Jays went 66 yards on 15 plays and capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown strike from junior David Tammaro to sophomore Ryan Hubley.  The Blue Jays converted two third-down chances and a fourth-down attempt to keep the drive alive.

McDaniel (3-7, 2-7 CC) made it an 11-point game at the half as Peyton Denlinger drilled a 36-yard field goal late in the second quarter after the Terror blocked a Blue Jay punt and took over deep in Johns Hopkins territory.  Denlinger missed a 38-yard field goal on the final play of the first half that would have sliced the deficit to 21-13.

Johns Hopkins turned the tables on the Terror early in the second half as sophomore Macauley Kilbane blocked a McDaniel punt that set the Blue Jays up at the Green Terror 35.  Six plays later it was senior Tyler Messinger going in with a 10-yard run up the middle to extend the Blue Jay lead to 28-10.

Any hopes for a McDaniel comeback were dashed less than two minutes later.  After the Blue Jay defense forced another McDaniel punt, Walters went 77 yards up the middle for his third touchdown of the game to push the margin to 35-10.  The 77-yard run is the longest of Walters' career.

As they had in the first quarter, the teams traded fourth-quarter touchdowns to account for the final score.  Matt Schleifer, who had scored McDaniel's first touchdown on an eight-yard reception, added his second score of the day with a 10-yard reception early in the fourth.  Hopkins answered with a 16-yard Tammaro-to-Luke McFadden touchdown pass with 12:41 on the clock to close out the scoring.

Walters needed just eight carries to rush for a game-high 120 yards and three touchdowns.  He became Hopkins' career touchdowns leader with his first score of the day and now has 54; he also topped 3,000 career rushing yards in the victory and now has 3,092.

Tammaro was 23-of-32 for 232 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.  McFadden was his favorite target with seven catches for 85 yards and the one score.  Hopkins totaled 516 yards on the day for its seventh 500-yard game of the season.

Junior Mike Kalanik led the Blue Jays defensively as he posted 11 tackles, including 5.0 for losses and 3.5 sacks.  Freshman Robert Fletcher added eight stops for Johns Hopkins, which held the Terror to 297 yards; this marks the sixth time this season the Blue Jays have held the opposition under 300 yards.

McDaniel's Tyler Palermiti was 19-of-34 for 183 yards and two touchdowns.  Brendan Bandy had a team-high seven receptions for 70 yards and Schleifer had four receptions for 38 yards with two of the four going for touchdowns.

Anthony Crawley had a game-high 14 tackles for the Terror defense, which held Johns Hopkins to just 172 yards before halftime, but surrendered 344 after intermission.

Notes:  Johns Hopkins honored its seniors prior to the game; the class has won the Centennial title in each of its four seasons, improved to 40-5 with today's win and never lose a regular season game at Homewood Field • The win today is the 43rdstraight regular season home win for the Blue Jays.
