BALTIMORE, MD – Jim Margraff, the winningest football coach in Johns Hopkins University history and the 2018 D3football.com National Coach of the Year, died suddenly at his Baltimore area home earlier today. 
 
Margraff, who was 58 and the head coach at his alma mater for 29 years, died less than one month after his Blue Jays advanced to the NCAA Division III Semifinals for the first time in school history and completed a program-record 12-win campaign (12-2).
 
A memorial service will be held on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus; details for the service will be announced in the near future.
                               
"Jim Margraff was a thoughtful, humble, passionate and exceptionally talented leader and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time," Johns Hopkins Director of Athletics Alanna W. Shanahan stated.  "He left an indelible impact on all he touched and he made us all better. We will forever be thankful for the unparalleled experiences he provided for so many over the course of his highly successful career."
 
Under Margraff's direction, Johns Hopkins posted a record 221-89-3, won a Centennial Conference-record 14 league championships and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs 10 times.
 
Margraff's 221 wins rank as the most in school and Maryland state history and also ranked third among active NCAA Division III head coaches at the conclusion of the 2018 season.  In addition to being named the D3football.com Coach of the Year in 2018, he was also tabbed the AFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year as well.
 
A 1982 Johns Hopkins graduate, Margraff is survived by his wife, Alice, and children Megan, James and Will.  Alice Margraff is a 1989 Johns Hopkins graduate, while Megan Margraff graduated from Johns Hopkins in 2017.
