HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sophomore Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamroneck) tallied the game-winning goal with just 11 seconds remaining to lift the Gettysburg College field hockey team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Eastern Mennonite University on Friday.

Gettysburg (1-0) wasted little time getting on the board for the first time in 2014 as Fitzgerald hit the back of the goal just 41 seconds into the contest. The Bullets continued to assert their will offensively in the opening period and picked up another goal, this time by sophomore Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien) off a feed by Fitzgerald 21 minutes into the game.

Following a defensive stop, Eastern Mennonite (0-1) forced a penalty corner with the ensuing shot by Jenessa Derstine turned away by Gettysburg freshman Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern). Derstine came right back and converted her next attempt to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 29th minute.

The Royals tied the game just over eight minutes into the second stanza as Mariah Martin tallied the equalizer. Gettysburg tried to answer quickly, but Eastern Mennonite goalie Hannah Daley logged four of her game-high 16 saves over the next four minutes. The visitors eventually broke through as junior Kim Engelhart (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) converted following a pass by senior Lexie Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) in the 52nd minute to make it 3-2.

Derstine struck again in the 58th minute, flipping a shot over the defense to tie the game. With the clock ticking away, the Bullets pressed the action on their offensive side of the field. Daley came up with two more stops in the final five minutes, but following a penalty corner, freshman Lindsay Kraus (Bal Air, Md./John Carroll School) found Fitzgerald near the goal for the game-winner.

Gettysburg finished with a 25-20 advantage in shots and an 8-7 edge in shots.

Haley Mowery made five saves to pick up the victory.

Gettysburg returns to action with a non-conference road trip to York (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 4:30 p.m.
