Centennial Conference Athletes of the Week - Jan. 9-15

LANCASTER, Pa. -- This week featured a full slate of awards with honors being distributed in all seven Centennial Conference winter sports.

Vinny Deangelo of Swarthmore men's basketball earned his second straight weekly award while Lauren Phillips of Johns Hopkins women's indoor track & field broke a 19-year-old Centennial record in the 60m dash. Other weekly winners included Andrea Prestianne of Washington College women's basketball, Luke McKenna of Gettysburg men's swimming, Mia Yancey of Gettysburg women's swimming, Connor Powell of Johns Hopkins wrestling, Jamie Moreland of Haverford men's indoor track & field, Chett Brunner of McDaniel men's indoor track & field, and Victoria Kadiri of Johns Hopkins women's indoor track & field.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Athlete of the Week
Vinny Deangelo, Jr., G, Swarthmore
Aston, Pa. | Sun Valley
DeAngelo helped lead the No. 12 Garnet to 11-straight victories as they topped No. 11 Johns Hopkins, Washington College, and Gettysburg College to remain unbeaten in the conference. The junior guard had his second 30-point effort of the season with 30 points versus Gettysburg. He also recorded 23 points earlier in the week at Washington College on 9-of-13 shooting.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Andrea Prestianne, Sr., G, Washington College
Kennett Square, Pa. | Kennett
Prestianne averaged 17.7 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game, 3.0 assists per game and 1.7 steals per game to go along with 9-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in a 2-1 week for the Shorewomen. On Thursday in the Shorewomen's 63-60 come-from-behind win over visiting Swarthmore, she scored a game-best 21 points, 18 of them coming in the second half when Washington rallied from an 18-point third quarter deficit to win by three. 14 of her 18 points came in the game-closing 34-13 run and she had the assist on the basket that put the Shorewomen ahead for good. Prestianne also added seven rebounds and handed out four assists in the victory. In the team's win at Bryn Mawr on Tuesday, she scored a game-best 17 points and pulled down six boards. On Saturday against visiting Muhlenberg, the senior netted 15 points.

MEN'S SWIMMING

Luke McKenna, Jr., Gettysburg
Collegeville, Pa. | Spring-Ford
McKenna led the Bullets in the first two meets of 2023. Against Scranton on Jan. 7 at FAU, he recorded two second-place individual finishes. The junior posted a time of 55.02 seconds in the 100 fly and 51.29 seconds in the 100 free. At Washington and Lee, he broke the Generals’ pool record in the 1000, posting a time of 9:52.45 to win the event. He was also third in the 500 free (4:53.82) and fifth in the 200 fly (2:01.67).

WOMEN'S SWIMMING
 
Athlete of the Week
Mia Yancey, So., Gettysburg
Wallingford, Pa. | Strath Haven
Yancey recorded four individual wins to start 2023. Against Scranton on Jan. 7, she won the 200 free (2:00.60) and 100 IM (1:02.58). She was also part of the 200 free relay that touched first with a combined time of 1:44.38. At Washington and Lee a week later, Yancey also won the 200 free with a time of 1:55.86 while also touching first in the 200 IM (2:13.10). She also placed third in the 100 free (53.83 seconds) and as part of the 200 medley relay.

WRESTLING

Connor Powell, Fr., 149, Johns Hopkins
Powder Springs, Ga. | Hillgrove
Powell led the Blue Jays at the Virginia Duals as he went 4-0 on the weekend. He scored a second-period pin to fuel a 27-24 come-from-behind win against Apprentice and picked up two wins by decision and one by forfeit. One of his decisions was a 3-2 win over seventh-ranked Hai Siu of Averett.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
 
Track Athlete of the Week
Jamie Moreland, Sr., Haverford
Los Angeles, Calif. | Campbell Hall
Moreland began the indoor campaign by posting a career-best time of 1:54.55 in the 800 meters at the TCNJ Invitational, winning the event title with the best time in the Centennial Conference thus far in 2022-23. The time was also the sixth-best, and top non-converted mark in Division III so far this year.
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Chett Brunner, Jr., McDaniel
Sykesville, Md. | Century
Brunner won the shot put with a distance of 14.92m at the Kaye and JJ Smith Invitational. This mark is 26th in the nation.
 

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
 
Track Athlete of the Week
Lauren Phillips, So., Johns Hopkins
Mount Laurel, N.J. | Moorestown Friends School
Phillips was JHU's top performer at TCNJ's Lion Invitational. She placed third in the 60-meter dash (7.68), fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.54), and anchored the Blue Jays’ first-place 4x400-relay (3:58.14). Her time in the 60m dash broke a 19-year-old Centennial record, while her time in the 200 fell just .03 short of the CC mark - both of those marks also rank in the top 10 nationally this season.
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Victoria Kadiri, Jr., Johns Hopkins 
Lynn, Mass. | Phillips Academy
Kadiri placed third in the triple jump (12.11m) and fourth in the long jump (5.75,) at TCNJ's Lion Invitational. She was the only Division III competitor to finish in the top six in either event. Her mark in the long jump is the best in the nation this season, while her effort in the triple jump ranks second (she has the top two marks in the nation in both events thus far this season).
