Dickinson College Director of Athletics Joel Quattrone has announced the hiring of Brad Tulenko (Methodist University '12) as the new head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs. Tulenko brings a strong tennis background and has been involved as a club professional and coach for more than a decade.
Quattrone is excited about the experience that Tulenko brings to the position. "We are thrilled to have found an individual with the tennis knowledge that Brad possesses, combined with an intense desire to mentor college athletes," Quattrone expressed. "Brad brings great energy to both of our programs, and I look forward to watching our student-athletes develop."
Tulenko comes to Carlisle from Charlottesville, Virginia where he has served as the head tennis coach and program director at The Covenant School. Prior to returning to his hometown of Charlottesville, Tulenko was the owner and director of the Hidden Palms Tennis & Swim Club in Vero Beach, Florida. He was responsible for all aspects of running the club, serving as a men's and women's USTA coach and providing clinics and lessons. He coordinated a high-level Juniors tournament which featured players ranked in the top 20, nationally.
He also served as the head coach of the boys' and girls' programs at Vero Beach High School, leading both teams to the State 4A Quarterfinals. He has worked at numerous clubs and was involved in evaluating through the USTA Player Development Program from 2010-2012.
Tulenko is a 2012 graduate of Methodist University where he was a member of the men's tennis from 2008-2011, posting an overall singles record of 26-14. He played number-one singles for The Covenant School from 2005-2008 where he was a three-time All-Central Virginia First-team selection, three-time All-VIC First-team in singles and a two-time VIC singles champion. Tulenko was ranked the number-one Division II high school player in Virginia as a senior, leading his team to a state title.
Tulenko checked in with Assistant Athletic Director Christian Payne, for a Q&A to share his perspective on becoming Dickinson's new head coach.
Christian Payne: Why is this opportunity at Dickinson special for you?
Brad Tulenko: This is a great opportunity for me as a young coach because the staff is supportive, and the team is motivated. Dickinson is an incredible school in a beautiful place, and I'm excited to build a top-notch tennis program here while working with both the men and women's teams.
CP: What are your goals for the Dickinson men's and women's tennis programs?
BT: My goal for this season is to see a marked improvement in every player on the team from No. 1 to No. 15.
CP: How would you describe your coaching style?
BT: Coaching tennis players at this age is such a rewardning opportunity. We are able to shape not just tennis games, but young men and women who are ready to take on the world. Life skills plus hard work translates to on-court success.
CP: How have your past experiences in tennis/leadership prepared you for this opportunity?
BT: Playing college tennis at Methodist University was one of my favorite experiences. Having a great coach at the collegiate level helped shape me as the person I am today, and I hope to pass that on to my players.
As a young owner and director of a tennis club in Florida for six years I got to manage employees and run a Juniors academy. This introduced me to my love for coaching and building meaningful relationships with my players.
