COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team got 13 points from junior Beatriz Williams and 10 from classmate Liz Tommasi en route to a 58-52 win over host Urinsus Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference while the Bears fall to 1-3 on the season, including an 0-2 mark in the conference.
Trailing 50-48 with 3:27 to play in the game, senior Stacy Fairey hit a jumper with 3:27 remaining to ignite a game-ending 10-2 run to seal the victory. Fairey's jumper, which forced the eighth and final tie in the game, was followed by a pair of free throws from Tommasi and a layup from junior Katie Clark that pushed the lead to 54-50 with 1:44 remaining in regulation.
The Bears were within 54-51 after a free throw by Caroline Shimrock and had a pair of three point attempts that would have tied the game with just under a minute to play, but Williams gabbed the rebound on the second miss and nailed both of her free throws to make it 56-51 with 41 seconds left. Williams added two free throws in the final seconds after Ursinus made one-of-two from the line to account for the 58-52 final score.
Johns Hopkins twice had a seven-point lead in the first half, the last of which came at 24-17 with 2:15 remaining in the opening 20 minutes after a Fairey jumper, but Ursinus closed the half with a 6-0 run to pull within 24-23 at intermission. A three-pointer by Hannah Kelly jump-started the Bears' half-ending run, which also included a layup by Jessica Porada.
Neither team led by more than three in the first eight minutes of the second half before the Blue Jays created a bit of separation midway through the half as a Clark three made it 39-34 and a pair of Williams free throws later made it 41-36.
