Hopkins & Haverford Advance; Gettysburg Knocked Out

Haverford and Johns Hopkins opened the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament with neutral-site victories on Friday, while Gettysburg saw its season come to an end at home. 


In Medford, Mass., Haverford (22-6) posted a resounding 80-37 victory over Rosemont (24-4) at Cousens Gymnasium on the campus of Tufts. The Fords now advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the second time in program history, joining the 2013-14 squad as Haverford teams to reach the round of 32. The Fords snapped Rosemont's 19-game winning streak and held the Ravens to their lowest point total and field goal percentage of the season in the triumph. Haverford will take on No. 4 Tufts at 5 p.m Saturday. 

Haverford had four scorers in double figures, as Megan Furch poured in 14 points and added seven rebounds. Maddie Gallic notched her first career double-double adding 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Anna-Sophia Capizzi connected on three treys and finished with 13 total points. First year Caroline Andersen, playing just 11 miles from her hometown of Wilmington, Massachusetts, added a career-high 14 points and four rebounds off the bench in the 43-point victory. 


In Scranton, Pa., Johns Hopkins (23-4) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 58-42 victory over Eastern Connecticut State (19-9) on Friday night. The Blue Jays had three players score in double-figures while Rory Cole recorded a double-double in the victory.

Lexie Scholtz led Hopkins with 16 points while Lillian Scott finished with 11. Cole registered her fifth double-double this season as she finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. 

Hopkins will play Scranton on Saturday at 6 p.m. with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line. 


In Gettysburg, Pa., Gettysburg battled against a tough Christopher Newport team in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as the game came right down to the wire, but the Captains edged the Bullets 82-78 in front of a loud and supportive crowd inside Bream Gym Friday night.

The loss ended an amazing career for the dynamic senior duo of point guard Teal Tasker and  Emma Dorshimer.They have led the Bullets to the most successful four-year period in program history, which includes an 87-23 record, three-straight conference title game appearances, three-straight 20-win seasons, two trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, and a conference championship. Dorshimer closed her Gettysburg tenure as the program leader in three-pointers made (229) and second in school history and sixth in conference history with 1,683 points.
